I have been thinking, the Jedi use a variety of force abilities, and the Sith (or whatever you want to call them) use different ones. For instance, Jedis don't use the choke and don't use lightning. Why is this? Is the idea that once you use the choke or the lightning that you will inevitably be consumed by the darkside and become evil?

I think it would be interesting if there was a Jedi who was powerful enough to use these techniques without being overwhelmed and turn 'evil'.

Some might argue that burning people with lightning and choking them to death are not very productive things to do. However, Jedis also cut people to pieces with their light sabres, and remain 'good'. Lightning and choking are just other ways of dealing with evil people right?

What do other people think (apart from that I'm an idiot)

Well, I think what powers you use have little to do with dark and light. I think what powers you use reflect your beliefs somewhat. The lightning thing is also used to cause fear in your enemy (because it's pretty damn scary). Jedi don't do that sort of thing. And choke is something that no Jedi would use, because it's basically torture. You wouldn't use it in battle, so the only time you would is when you're attacking someone who's not defending himself.

If someone is attacking me witha lightsabre, I think that choking them, and thus imobilizing them, would be a handy thing to do. It's not really torture in this instance, it's just stopping them attacking. Then you can walk towards them while they are choking and then kill them with lightsabre.

Lightning is just handy for dispatching people. Jedi use the force push to knock over a bunch of robots. Why not lightning their ass?

Well, I guess you're right, but the reason that never happened is you don't get to see a cool lightsabre battle. tongue.gif

Lightning to robots? That would take a while to kill them, I think. Did you see how long Luke held out against the lightning? Lightsabres are easier. In fact, I think that lightning may be a torture thing...

And the list of force powers Jedi have should not be contained by what we saw in the movies. I'm sure that by the very nature of the force, there are much more things that Jedi/sith can do.

Heh yea. I think that they try to make out that choking people and using lightning is like a dishonorable thing to do. But really, so is using force push in my opinion. Also like you say, they are more torturous and cruel techniques usually. But like I said, it'd be cool if there was a Jedi who used them sparingly in times of desperation but didn't go dark.

That would just be like a cop-out.

"I can't win by my values, so I'm gonna use the values of my enemy as an excuse to break my own."

And on the dark jedi thing, wasn't Kyle from Jedi Knight (the game) like that?

Yea that's right. He was a dickhead though in my opinion.

About the values, my point is that their values are pretty messed up. It's okay to kill people, but it's not okay to choke them? That doesn't make much sense to me. Okay, choking people for ages just to hurt them, that seems wrong. But choking them to get them to stop attacking and to imobilize them, that seems fair enough.

What fun is a battle without Jedi and sith clashing blades?

I guess the Sith don't use their electricity and choking all the time either, and yea it is to get the cool sabre fights. But even so, you don't see a Jedi use choking or electricity on anyone at all. They could use it at some point to deal with an irritating pleb at some point. That way you'd retain all the sabre fights, but also see a Jedi totally degrobulate someone.

In Both KotOR and KotOR II: tSL all force adepts could use all force powers, dark or light, or neutral, but depending on your alignment, you could use them more or less efficiently. So for example, a dark side character could use a dark side power, such as force lightning or choke, much more efficiently and with less effort (mana in reality) than a light side character.

I imagine the Jedi are supposed to avoid causing pain as much as possible. Choking and electrifying people may not kill them outright, but it's still a pretty nasty and painful thing to do to someone - I should think they'd only use these methods as a last resort. In some of the SW games the Jedi have a way to temporarily stun or immobilise opponents without hurting them, but that hasn't showed up in the films (probably because it just wouldn't look cool).

The sandpeople had women and children. We know this because Anakin killed them how could he tell? The children might be smaller but I never saw a sandperson with breasts. Did they hike their skirts and show him some leg or something?

Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

I already said why I think some sides favor some powers, instead of certian powers being light and dark themselves. Refer to my counter argument there.

A Jedi uses the force for knowlede and defense.
Never attack.

So push is simply used to knock a droid over so it can't fight effectively because its on the ground and can't get up - but lightning and choking and hurling big blocks are direct force attacks. Jedi don't do that.
Sith on the other hand have no qualms about blasting foes with lightning because well... that's what sith do.
Its not the powers, its the intent behind them, and a lightning blast is pretty much an attack.

But Jedi are happy to cut people to bits with lightsabres, which is an attack

Luke choked some Gamorrean (sp?) Guards in ROTJ. But that's probably explainable by the fact that he was a Jedi that...maybe marched a bit more to his own drummer than most of the plentiful Knights in the past?

He was driven a lot by an underlying anger.
