I don't know why it seems strange to me, but it does.

In ESB, there are Earth snakes and lizards on Dagobah.

In the made-for-TV Ewoks movies, there are Earth horses. I think there may even be Earth dogs, but don't quote me on that.

If humans evolved long ago in a galaxy far, far away, it makes perfect sense that simpler creatures such as snakes and lizards and even horses might look exactly the same there as they do here.

And yet the idea still seems unlikely and non-Star-Wars-ian to me.

Of course there could be horses. The people in star wars call themselves Humans for goodness sake. I'm sure are horseflies and seahorses in the sw galaxy. And they're somehow related to Admiral Ackbar and Poggle the Lesser.

I think in the scripting for Star Wars Obi-Wan said to Luke - "Still even a duck must be taught to swim." to which Luke said "what's a duck."

Glad that bit didn't make it.

Snakes and lizards were fine though.

I wouldve felt better if they had glued big ears or a fake moustashe to those lizards in the Dagobah sequence, to really nail down that 'galaxy far far away look'.

Given that there are humans in the Star Wars galaxy, it's not that much of a stretch to believe that there would be other Earth-like animals as well. Horses might be a bit much, however.

I dunno, I think this is a great topic. This phenomenon bothers me as well.

Sure, there are humans in the SW galaxy but the inclusion of Earth animals seems somehow wrong to me.

There are ducks in The Phantom Menace. I don't know why but I think I let this go in my "78 Reasons."

Also, there is an entry in the official Star Wars databank for ducks.

I think that without explanation from Lucas, it is lazy to incluce earth animals - even snakes and lizards. However, it is almost just as lazy to make up a zany alien creature and then give them a 'hilarious' european accent.

Yeah, I never really understood why there were Earth creatures in Star Wars. Since there are humans there, it's entirely possible that some Earth creatures also evolved there, but it doesn't seem to right to have horses, dogs and ducks existing in the same universe as Rontos, Banthas and Dewbacks.

Horses in the Ewok movies? I've never heard of them before (but I've never seen the Ewok movies, either). I think horses are a bit of a stretch, but I can accept the snakes, and even the ducks.

Well, interestingly enough, the one Earth animal we know has to exist in their universe is the falcon. Compared to that, a few species such as dogs and ducks don't seem all that unlikely, if we assume they're not exactly the same as ours.

In KOTOR there was an alien woman who looked a bit like a cat, and I think someone briefly referred to her as 'the cat-woman', so I guess they must have cats as well. Maybe her race evolved from cats, like the guy in Red Dwarf? Oh yeah, and there was a starship called the Ebon Hawk... seems that they share a lot of our bird species, at least.

In the Marvel comic, there was a green humanoid rabbit that fought alongside Han Solo for a couple issues.

It would make sense to have plenty of Earth animals. I mean, on of the most complex animals here is human right? Why not other, less complex ones? The less complex they are, the more likely they are to have evolved independantly of our species. So if humans happened, I can see horses happening eventually. There are lots of planets, you know.

Well, humans we're stuck with, until we give up on actors and go pure CGI. The other mammals I agree make the thing a bit terrestrial. Weird alien species like Tauntauns, Mynocks, Gundarks and Dewbacks sell the whole "different planet" business. I'm glad I never noticed ducks and don't remember seeing any horse.

I think the humans in Star Wars allow the viewer to connect with the main characters, rather than having every single character as a weird alien type. So it's fair enough to expect the viewer to make the kind of acceptance. but having earth animals in the film, I don't see how that benefits anything

It's plausible there'd be geese and unicorns too. I didn't know about the ducks, didn't have a problem with them. Action figures would be too much.

Come to think of it, I remember being a tad irked (OT criticism here) of the snake in ESB from the start. Pulled me away, that's all.

"That little Human's" blah blah, two-headed commentary did the same thing.
