Can I call this discussion "sick" yet? No? C'mon, people, the Sand People are a whole different species, right? Why they gonna be interested in old Bergman actresses?

I agree with Jariten that it's not really important to the films how Shmi dies, just that she does and Annakin goes loco. For me the big question is: "Why doesn't anyone care that he just massacred a whole mess of noncombatants because he got angry?" To my mind, he should have been brought back to Coruscant in restraints and shot.

Quite true, it's because he's an idiot. No one likes him, and no one cares about him.

Or even make somebody doubt that the punk was the chosen one.

Yes, yes you can.
Shmi wasn't raped. She died of starvation and tiedupness. There is no evidence that she was raped, there is no evidence she was fed and there is considerable evidence that she was tied up. You can die from starvation and from tiedupness - why do you need to think about whether or not there was anything more to it.

As to why Anakin wasn't arrested an sent to live with the Mormons as punishment well that's because his precious Padme didn't hand him over to Obi-Wan to be booted in his bottom.

Come on, Lucasverse is a PG (or PG-13 at the extreme), and she would not have been raped.

In my rewrites, she's a prisoner, been somewhat tortured, but still well enough to leave under her own power. The Tuskens accidently shoot her after Anakin frees her, and then he goes ballistic.

For what it's worth, I totally guessed that Anakin would go back to Tatooine and go on a rampage over his mother's death, long before Ep. II came out.

But I figured it would be Watto he killed. Oh well. sad.gif
I finally got a sig!

In my re-write, the Sand People get their wires crossed, and they think it was Watto who did the slaughter, so they go after him and kill him. So alls well that ends well. By the way, I am lying. But I do hate Watto.

Well only Padme knows, so I suppose the question is "why didnt Padme do anything about it?". If we compare her reaction to that to her reaction to the youngling massacre, you could come to the conclusion that the tuskans were regarded as "animals" like Anakin said, they captured and tortured and killed his mother, and hence they 'deserve' it. I'd like to hear Lucas' take on it. For me, life is life and I wish we had some more Padme reaction scenes.

For ME the big question is why the hell did he care if she was dead since he hasn't seen her in ten years and made no effort to do so? Jedi academy is pretty strict but surely they allow some time off.

And Shimi probably had to die to send Anakin to the Dark Side, but it doesn't do ANYTHING to explain why he goes off on a bitchfit against Obi-Wan. "It's all Obi-Wans fault!". Um..how exactly? I would have had Anakin and Obi-Wan go to rescue Shimi together. Obi-Wan would be all "Don't let your fear and anger lead you into wrong decisions! We should try to reason with these people. Force should only be a last resort!" and Anakin would be like "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT MAN?!?!? They're gonna fucking kill her! Let's break some heads!". Obi-Wan would convince Anakin to talk to the Sand People, and of course everything would go tits up. The only problem with this is that you couldn't have Anakin slaughtering the Tuskens, cos Obi-Wan would probably report him and would DEFINITELY refuse to train him anymore. Maybe Obi-Wan could be knocked unconcious or something.

And what killed Shimi? Do you even have to ask? The Tusken Raiders obviously tied her up and made her watch the Ewok TV movies untill her brain imploded.

Oh, no. VD's here! Wait, he didn't even mention anything sexual even though that's what the topic starter's theory was. Ok, it's cool. We can come out from hiding now.

They made her watch Titan AE millions of times.

No attachements, that was the deal. He went to see her the first chance he got (when he was given his first assignment).

For the record, I've read that Sand People have "coming of age" rituals in their society, where young members of their community have to torture other sentient beings to death as a part of their initiation into adulthood.

Why this fact isn't mentioned in the movie is beyond me. I guess because, like everyone's been saying, it's not really important. They're "animals" anyway....

Then Padme is a bloody hypocrite. If you look at the deleted scenes, she's bleeding heart liberal, and she doesn't advocate war, and let's understand the Separatists, and let's make love, not war, and yaddayadda... She is a badly crafted character---pure and simple---Lucas had her all over the place in regards to principles, etc., and it's not because she's "complex" or anything, it's because Lucas doesn't know how to write female roles, nor did he have clear-cut visions of where and how and why his characters act.

I can not believe her character for a second, and if I can't do that, I can't like these movies.
