QUOTE
Gates predicts death of spam in 2 years
Sunday, January 25, 2004

DAVOS, Switzerland — Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates on Friday predicted the death of spam in two years and said his company is working on a new software that would make it impractical and uneconomical for marketers to send the mass e-mails that annoy so many e-mail users.

Gates made the bold prediction at the World Economic Forum, an annual gathering of business leaders in the Swiss skiing village of Davos.

One possible approach would send a puzzle back to the sender. The puzzle would be designed so that only a human could solve it. The e-mail would be accepted only if the puzzle were solved.

Gates is an idiot. Did he also predict the end of piracy? Anything he and his idiot company come up with will be countered within 48 hours.

This new thing sounds horrible. It sounds like if it does work it will now be difficult for the rest of us to send and receive regular emails.

The only way Gates could make it impractical and uneconomical to spam is if he charged a fee for sending emails.

But he wouldn't be able to charge everyone. Just his employees. But hey, it's a start!

Oh come now. All this negative feedback.

Perhaps every time you wanted to send an e-mail you would have to complete a quest. You would be required to earn the right to forward messages to mass amounts of people by battling dragons or great ogres of some sort, thus combining the medial task of e-mail with the reality sucking adventure of massively multiplayer gaming.

Spamming companies would hire only the greatest warriors to distribute their irritating comercial propaganda. Rich people would hire personal delivery stooges to convey important business messages.

And best of all, while the majority of America (and most likely Japan, possibly Canada) slowly turned towards this new cyber-reality, comfort-of-your-own-home, lifestyle, the rest of us could wander around the untravelled streets and admire the incredible sense of emptiness and peace. Or steal their cars.

It would be great if email were what lead to the dystopian future predicted by all those 80's post-apocalyptic movies.

Yeah, it'd be cool if spam somehow led to car jousting and cannibalism. I hear ya.

That joke is as old as the hills. However, it is funnier than the hills and--like the hills-- never gets old.

I hate the word spam. Can we start calling it something else? If we start the spark here it will soon catch all over the net like a wildfire.

I can't stand net lingo. Noob, Newb, gosu, uber......etc. It's so over used and annoyingly cute.

Me Gosu, me bouncy, me noob -_-; ^_^.!
