Alright. This is the one a few of you have been waiting for. This one didn't take me as long as ESB, because I already knew what I was doing by the time I got around to doing it. The grading scale is about the same. Every entry I make automatically gets +5 points. This time around, the only difference, is that there is no 'Darth Vader Malice'. Instead, I added 'villain fun'

Classic = Auto +10
Great Dialogue = Auto +5
Villain Fun = Auto +5

REASONS TO LOVE 'STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE'

* The opening space battle over Tatooine, between a star destroyer and the Tantive IV. Though, I must be honest, that the star destroyer was the only one firing shots. (Classic. +10 +5)

* Blaster battle on Tantive IV. These days, this battle wouldn't seem very cool. But for those of us who are true OT fans, this is truly a good opening for Star Wars. (Classic. +10 +5)

* Stormtrooper entrance. The door being blown to bits was pretty good, along with the stormtroopers walking through with all the smoke. (+5)

* Darth Vader's entrance. (Classic.Villain Fun. +10 +5 +5)

* Threepio and Artoo escaping on spacepod. (+5)

* First conversation between Vader and Leia. This dialogue really explains what the hell is going on... sorta. Although Leia is lieing, we still get the feel of the story.
(Dialogue. +5 +5)

* Sandcrawler. This is original. A steep, upside down trapezoid on tank wheels. (+5)

* Stormtrooper(s) riding on Dewback(s), in persuit of the droids. (+5)

* Introduction of Luke and Uncle Owen on the moisture farm, when the Jawas come to sell droids. (+5)

* Buying the droids from the Jawas. (+5)

* Luke finding the messege from Leia in Artoo. (+5)

* "Well, I don't know anyone named Obi-Wan. But old Ben lives out beyond the Dune Sea." (Classic. +10 Dialogue. +5 +5)

* Dinner conversation between Uncle Owen and Luke. (Dialogue. +5 +5)

* Twin suns setting. (+5)

* Luke and Threepio in speeder, looking for Artoo after he runs away the night before. (+5)

* Sandpeople, and banthas. (+5 +5)

* "Now thats a name I've not heard in a long time..." (Dialogue. +5 +5)

* "He didn't hold to your father's ideals; thought he should have stayed here and not gotten involved." (Dialogue. +5 +5)

* "You fought in the clone wars?" (Dialogue. +5 +5)

* "I was once a Jedi Knight, just like your father." (Dialogue. +5 +5)

* Obi-Wan (Ben), giving Anakin's lightsaber to Luke. (Classic. +10 +5)

* Ben's explanation of the force. (Classic. Dialogue. +10 +5 +5)

* Imperial meeting in Death Star. (All that comes with it) (Classic. Dialogue. Villain Fun (x2) +10 +5 +5 +5)

* Grand Moff Tarkin. (Villain Fun. +5 +5)

* Luke & Ben finding attacked sandcrawler. (+5)

* Luke finding dead Owen & Beru at the moisture farm. (+5)

* "I want to learn the ways of the force and become a Jedi like my father." (Dialogue. +5 +5)

* Coming to Mos Eisley. (+5)

* First Jedi mind trick. "You don't need to see his identification..." (Classic. Dialogue. +10 +5 +5)

* Cantina. (+5)

* Music & band in the cantina. (+5)

* Ben killing the gangster that harassed Luke in cantina. (+5)

* Introduction fo Han Solo and Chewy. (Classic. Dialogue. +10 +5 +5)

* Greedo. (Villain Fun. +5 +5)

* Han killing Greedo. (Classic. +10 +5)

* whistling.gif Han shooting first. (Classic. +10 +5)

* Leia brought to witness her planet being destroyed. (+5)

* Alderaan being destroyed. (Classic. Villain Fun +10 +5 +5)

* The remote, floating ball. (+5)

* Luke deflecting remote's shots with lightsaber. (Classic. +10 +5)

* Finding out Alderaan is destroyed. (+5)

* The shock of finding such a BIG space station... the Death Star. (Classic. +10 +5)

* Tracter beam pulling Falcon in. (+5)

* Han and Luke impersonating stormtroopers. (Classic. +10 +5)

* Overall journey inside the Death Star. (Classic. +10 +5)

It seems like you loved everything about A New Hope! I agree though, I feel it has the best good parts to bad parts ratio of the Star Wars films. Even The Empire Strikes Back had it's fair share of bad points.

Overall, I feel that what makes A New Hope is the way that it works as a stand alone film. You can watch it from beginning to end and feel satisfied. Sure, you may want to know more about Anakin's father, who wins the Galactic Civil War, etc., but it's not necessary in the story. It's the story of how a farmboy fulfilled his dreams and became a hero. Classic characters, classic dialogue, classic ships and landscapes. It's a shame that it was scarred so badly by the Special Edition (Greedo shooting first and Jabba), but it still manages to hold up, even today. I'd rather watch ANH than most of the films we get today, especially all of the sci-fi ones which seem to be crap these days. There's no doubt about it that ANH, or just plain Star Wars for ORIGINAL Original Trilogy fans, is one of the most iconic films of all time, and it will never be beaten in it's pure classicness. It's remarkable that only a short while after they created The Star Wars Holiday Special. Um...

I think ANH is the best of the originals.

very good list!

My brother mentioned something to me after watching it recently. When Luke asks Ben what happened to his father, Ben looks away for a brief second and hestitates ever so slightly before telling him the lie. Whether this was planned or not, it shows what a great actor does and makes that scene more powerful in retrospect.

Also, if you notice, before they speak of anything relating to what happened to luke's father, 3PO shuts off voluntarily. Obviously, in 1976, GL had no clue about prequels or anything. But it still fits in well when you take the Prequels into account meaning that he might have a program that forces him off once he hears anything about the Clone Wars.

In the same scene when Ben gets Anakin's lightsabre Luke asks what it is and Artoo replies.

They didnt have dewbacks in the original version, only the SE.

I dont think anything from the SE could be counted as an improvement.

Dewbacks WERE in the original. Stormtroopers rode them in the desert (there were just far-away shots of them though, and they were models), and there was an animatronic Dewback outside the cantina.
