Come to think of it.....what does this mean?
I thought it used to imply it was his rank amongst the Jedi.

No we see it is just....well...nothing, really.

I mean Annie didn't have a cool different name. Or Yoda. Or the guy with the crazy neck. What heppened to him anyhow? Didn't they want to lop off the bean off a head in EpIII?

So what the F?

Oh, right. Just sloppy story telling and inconsistent thinking. Or was it all justified in some damn EU book?

Beats me. I just figured it was some cool spacey name to make him seem more mysterious and majestic. Let's face it, Ben is just sort of... average.

Maybe "Obi-Wan" a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away is as common as "Billie Bob" is in the south.

I think in one of the EU books, when Luke has a child they name him Ben after Obi Wans original name. Have to re-read that part in the book again. So that does beg the question if he got to change his oringinal name why didn't other Jedi...Sith seem to do it all the time

I always assumed, since Luke and Owen knew him as Ben, but Bail and Vader knew him as Obi-Wan that he assumed the name Ben in his hiding on Tatooine.

I figured Ben was the name he took when he settled into his normal life, as to remain inconspicuous and what not.

I think it is all part of GL's original samurai influenced story. Obi is the japanese word for the belt on a kimono. Don't know what wan means though. Probably japanese for asteroid!

Yeah, but that was when Lucas was subtle about references to his other films
