Even way back when, I remember reading articles in which Lucas said that he had a lot of backstory for SW already written.

But while he may have had a vague and general storyline, I doubt it was anything like its current incarnation.

I think he made most of it up as he went along. If he's really had most of the prequels worked out for almost 30 years, he worse at writing than I thought.

On the Maltin interviews (THX VHS, SW:Anh '95) Lucas clearly speaks of sketchy details, "and then we had to come up with a backstory for it" kind of ramblings, referring to his newer (TPM) works. Meanwhile, Leonard salivates.

Lucas has ALWAYS said crap like this. Anyone who's seen the special features on the TPM DVD knows it's a load of crap because there's a scene of him at Skywalker Ranch in like 1995 where he talks about making the movies and says, "Now, all I need is a story..." And he's just sitting there with a blank look on his face and a pencil.

I think when he had the original ideas for Star Wars he may have also had the idea for Vader who was a fallen Jedi. Just because he had that idea 30+ years ago doesn't mean he had all of ROTS and the PT written.

Lucas is obviously lieing, since he can never admit that he isn't always ahead of the game.
