Well, I planned on making a little preview before my final review, but this pretty much turned out to be it. Let me know if I left anything out and I'll address that too.

So far I've been through about 12 hours and 2 chapters of the game and I have to say,

wow.
This game is pretty impressive.
Since I haven't finished, I am going to address the issues from the past Resident Evils. I also use a four star rating. sad.gif =crap, mellow.gif =average, smile.gif =good, biggrin.gif =amazing.

Control: 1.5 mellow.gif
Even though it's now more of a shooter than survival horror, he still controls like a tank, but the over the shoulder camera makes it a bit easier. However, there are some very useful tweaks. Now you can use the knife quickly by holding 'L'. Very useful for breaking crates instead of having to open the menu and switch weapons twenty times. The quick turn is back for, well... quick 180s. You can't reload from the item menu, you can do it only if you have the weapon equipted.

Camera: 2 mellow.gif
The over-the-shoulder camera is now in place and it is both good and bad. It now allows for you to aim instead of locking on. This means the gameplay is more exciting and in your control. The downside is that it's fucking impossible to see if anyone is sneaking up behind you. That means that you have to set your back up against a wall for combat. But so far I've had very little of the villagers sneaking up behind me. The camera really needed to at least have a zoom out option.

Gameplay: .3.5 biggrin.gif
Though it's not at the pace of other shooter games, this is actually a good thing. It allows you to think faster and have more time to prepare for the assault. And assault you they do. One of the first things that happens in the game (and if you've seen any of the preview movies you probably know what I'm talking about)is when you enter the village. Once the villagers notice you, your best bet is to barracade yourself inside the two story house. You find the shotgun and a grenade. The villagers raise ladders, break through windows, and dodge your shots, all while you are shooting with an ever dwindling supply of ammo. Just before you get completly overwhelmed , they all leave for church, apparently. Don't ask me why. E-mail Capcom if you're that interested. These sequences are the most fun in the game. Especially when you're helped by Luis defending another house. It's tension packed as the villagers slowly push you back up the stairs.

At one point the villagers break out the TNT. They were barracaded behind sand traps. All I had to do was shoot the guy with the TNT and stun him long enough for the TNT to blow up. BANG! no more villagers.

I was concerned about having the president's daughter tagging along. It turns out that she isn't that bad. At the touch of a button she will either stay where she is or follow you. If you see someone sneaking up behind her to carry her away, and aim at her, she ducks so you can shoot the abductor. If she's following you and you see enemies, she runs behing you to hide. If you fing a large trash can she can hide in it to both stay out of your way and not to be abducted.

Sound: 3 smile.gif
Unlike the RE remake, this actually has music which changes pace to suit the mood of the game, and the music is pretty good. It is also supported for Dolby II surround sound, for those wealthy gamers.

The voiceovers are definitly good. Mabye not Viewtiful Joe quality, but still pretty good. And the monsters all sound excelent. Each of the guns each have a unique sound, so when the shotgun is fired, you definitly know it.

Graphics: 4 biggrin.gif
Th graphics are bueatiful. It has a very unique, stylized look to it. All the characters look great, and the environments are absolutely bueatiful. One level was a windy canyon that was reminicent of Zelda:OOT. You could actually see the sand getting blown around.

Overall: 3.5 biggrin.gif
This game is everything I hoped for.

What a great review. biggrin.gif
I loved the graphics to this game so, so much. It's 2nd only to HalfLife 2 which had THE most beautiful graphics I have ever seen... lol

Yeah, Half-Life 2 pwns with the graphics and physics engine. None other can compare. And no, Doom 3 can not - it is very inefffiecient having every pixel use realtime lighting seperately. Yes, I just used pwns in a serious context.

I guess I'll have to check this game out.

Yeah.
The art style actually reminds me of Half-Life 2.

I forgot to mention that you have typewriters still, but no damn ink ribbons. RE fans rejoice!

There are much fewer puzzles this time, but I'm stuck on one of those square slidey puzzles where there are nine squares, and one is empty. You have to slide the squares to make a Picture. Damn you Capcom!

And there are RPG elements. Your weapons can all be upgraded by the mysterious gun salesman who offers no explination as to why he's there. I have to say that it's useful too. My Red9 gun does 3 damage now, when the base pistol's is 1.

I'm on chapter 3-4 now.

It seems that Capcom realized that the game was about 100 times better when you didn't have to watch out for her, because she get's abducted every five minutes. I think I've spent about 2 hours of game time with her.

Okay, it's been a while since it came out, and we've got some new kids on the forum. So..... anyone else played it yet? I've also realized that the game should've ended before you leave the village. The part on the island has a totally different feel to it, and it doesn't match the rest of the game. Also it just seems to drag on forever....

I first played the remake, and loved it. Zero was just as good. I then got 2 for my gamecube, and thought it was crap. Never got around to getting 3 or 4.

Well, it's not as good as the remake, or scary as it, but it still holds up remarkably well on it's own. You should probably rent it, if you think you have enough time in a week to beat it. Took me around 40 hours first time through, and 20 second time.

It wasn't as good, but it still stood on it's own. RE2 was just terrible, I thought.

True. Usually, graphics don't mean much to me, but when a game relies so much on atmosphere, then graphics actually make a part of the allmighty gameplay.

Exactly. Almost more important than graphics is sound, at least when it comes to atmosphere.

I have RE4 paused on my T.V. right now, and I don't think I've ever been so addicted to a game since the first Half-life.

Here's my schedule:

Get up, go to work, come home, play RE4, go to sleep, repeat.

It's been going on like this for several days now.
