Okay so Luke flys off to wherever with the droids and when he returns, he finds his uncle and aunt burned to death. So the question is, what happened? The only concievable answeres I can come up with are that;

1)The troopers thought they knew the plans, so they burned them.

2)Owen wouldn't tell them where the droids were, so they burned them.

Now, it's fairly obious that a search of the premisis was done, and no matter if they turned up the droids or not, everyone there would've died. The Death Star plans were too big of a liability for the Empire to leave anyone alive who might have seen them.

I'm going to assume that since I think Owen wasn't stupid, and he had what's best for Luke in mind, he wouldn't have told the troopers where the droids were, because he knew something was up, and that they were in deep shit.

I think it's also clear that they died trying to crawl away from the fire, so another question is; why the hell did the stormtroopers light thier house on fire? I think the answer to this one's obious; they didn't want to leave any trace. Some Imperial commander knew that if they shot Owen and Beru, someone would figure them out. "What do you mean, 'Owen's dead'? Shot? Say, there's been a lot of stormtroopers around here lately, and it seems they're searching for something..."

But that point brings up another question... Why the hell does the Empire care what the populus thinks of them? They already know that most people hate them, and I simply don't think they would care if anyone made the connection, unless they think that it would bring more people to the support of the Rebellion.

Well, I guess I answered all of my own questions...

I love the "Troops" explanation. LOL!!

The simplest explanation is... they resisted or didn't give the answers they wanted, and they paid for it.

I also forgot to mention that they must've been tied down prior to the fire being started, otherwise they would've gotten out, then promptly been thrown back in by the troopers.

It's a little too depressing to think what they might have done to those folks... Poor Aunt Beru. I shall miss your haircut and blue milk. sad.gif

i think one of the storm troopers had a flamethrower.

i think any "torching" was done to destroy anything of importance.
like copies of the plans...

Seeing that Owen wanted R2's memory erased without knowing exactly what kind of data was in his memory, I would think that when the Stormtroopers came over, they interrogated Own and Beru, and they gave the 'I don't know what you're talking about' response. Of course, they meant that part for real, but I think that the Stormtroopers weren't satisifed with that, and instead of letting them off the hook, they fried them and their farm.

Did it occur to you that the stormtroopers just shot them and burned the whole place and that's why they were in the state they were in?

But since you've mentioned it, it is a real oddity of the movie. It's very nasty and barbaric and it doesn't look like a modern sci-fi way of killing people... looks more like something from Conan the barbarian. And it's uncomfortably out of place with the rest of the movie.

If George had edited THAT part out of his special editions, then I think I would have understood the change. It is a very strange flaw... and it makes you wonder what the hell George was thinking.

*EDIT - I've figured it out! They shot Owen and Beru in the conventional sci-fi way but then burned the house and left them like that so it would look like a horde of savage sand people were responsible.

Crafty buggers. Very crafty.

I dunno about removing this scene. I mean, I hate it, and I can barely stand to look at it, but that's why it's effective, isn't it? It, maybe better than anything in the rest of the move, shows how evil the Empire really is, how brutal they are.
I finally got a sig!

it was a much more effective narative catalyst as well, then anikans.

farm boy looses farm, possesions, custodian/guardians, at the hands of the empire he has been asked to fight.

sure beats: slave kid shows talent for racing go-carts, gets swindled from master in crooked gambling game, brought into the fold for the hell of it.

It's a chilling scene, given the understanding that these are Luke's family.

"Hi, this is my girlfriend Beru" detracts from the scene, by making weighty characters a little less.

This is what happens when you're surrounded by yes men. Everyone's too afraid to bring up this simple fact, "Hey, George. Why not just make her his wife?"

How hard would it have been to make her his wife? It would have sounded so much less dumb. Why girlfriend? There is absolutely no reason whatsoever.
