I'll do a remarkable turn here and come out in support of Lucas.
Ian McDirmid is seriously and genuinely old these days - and when they stippled him up into his Emperor look in 1983 he came out that way - put him through the same process these days and he'll come off much more extreme.
He does look silly - but it is understandable.
But I never did see a Star Trek Alien look that stupid.

He looks even more hideous than in ROTJ... did he get some beauty surgery or something?

i disagree with you Mnesymone...

it's so totally not the same proccess.

the top make up looks like they applied stuff to him, wereas the bottom one is too sculpted...

it's too defined, like his face has new parts...

I'm with barend - the bottom one just looks like he's wearing a mask. If McDirmid is older now, why not just go easier on the makeup? Not to mention that it now seems the Emperor's looks have improved between the PT and the OT.

The sandpeople had women and children. We know this because Anakin killed them how could he tell? The children might be smaller but I never saw a sandperson with breasts. Did they hike their skirts and show him some leg or something?

Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

I just read the Yoda thread where someone brought up a similar comparison. I sense a pattern. My theory - which in no way is groundbreaking - is that the people making the prequels are more confident (and more skilled) using a different special effects medium...

It's like they're forgetting how things used to be done.

I dunno, the Emperor in ROTJ looked genuine. Everytime I see Palpatine in "darkside" form in ROTS it looks like make up.

Meh, it's awful. I remember the glamour still of him and REALLY being PO'd. At least with the old makeup, he could make expressions, right?

This new mask was probably designed from the action figure. (NOW with Old Crazy Emperor Face that YOU attach!)

I think I've brought up his apparent plastic surgery before. His teeth and face end up looking better in ROTJ than they did 20 years before. They're not only more aesthetic (as in he's not as ugly) but more convincing. This dosnt just look like a mask, it looks like a scary horror movie mask.

Wow. Are you sure that's not a fake? The stuff I've seen of the ROTS Emperor has been different, but not...that different. That's just...wow.

No movie could be getting such great reviews with that. That's a face that only Jar-Jar could love.
