My room mates have decided that it's a great idea to skip out on the lease that we have on our current apartment and leave me with no phone & internet access and handling the hydro bill on my own. I've just been given the chance to write for a local indie media website and would more than likely lose that opportunity if I were to tell them something like "Yeah, well, I know you just hired me and all, but....I can't write anything for you until September." This is not something that I'd like to see happen. That, and there's no way I can afford the hydro bill on my own, there would be absolutely no furniture in the apartment aside from what's in my room, and well, it's just generally not a good idea for me to stay here with everyone leaving. So I've kind of had the amount of time that I had to save money to move shortened from four months, to about two weeks.

Ahaha, the joys of housemates. If they aren't playing Coldplay on full blast at four in the morning or voicing accusations about the level in their milk carton going down, they're skipping out on the lease.

That's a heart-rending story. Maybe you should put that explanation on your begging-page? It's a bit more persuasive than 'give me money I want some'.

In the event that you can't move in time, surely there'd be ways and means of getting around the job issue. All you'd really need is a way to send and receive files, perhaps through a friend's computer...?

I do not know this 'hydro' of which you speak.

Hey there Heccubus, I noticed you're asking your site readers to donate out of the kindness of their hearts. Here's some good webmaster-to-webmaster advice for ya, coming from someone doing something similar -

FORGET IT.

People who read stuff on the internet are wankers. I'm a wanker, you're a wanker, the internet is a big wank party up at Wanky McGee's. And wankers don't give away money for nothing because they need it to wank with. FR.com often gets somewhere around 20,000 hits daily and I never made a godforsaken penny out of those tightfisted buggernuts no matter how hard I tried to squeeze the tears out. I started offering the Special Editions, and now a good month nets about $40.

So, unless there's something exclusive and desirable you can offer donators, you might want to try selling your furniture instead. And I offer this advice with the best of intentions.

Brian on NuklearPower lives off of donations. He used to get his by offering nifty wall papers but I don't know if he even does that anymore. You could try making some sort of Heccubus Dance wall paper with little animated cartoon Heccubi.

I pretty much figured that a call for donations would result in a grand total of $0 heading my way, but it was really more of a last-ditch effort. That's why the site, and all projects are sort of on hold until after the move. I'm working more to try and make up the cost, which is sucking in what little free time I've had. Cut that in with the fact that I've been sick, and well...crappy MS Paint comics and poorly-written articles can take the bench for now. Thanks for the input, though, Yahtzee. I'm certain that this was your first and last post ever in my wing of the forums.

Brian on Nuklear Power also happens to be insanely popular (for reasons beyond my grasp) while I am dwindling on the "only the really really bored and stupid teenagers with nothing better to do" bracket for my target audience most of the time. Living off of donations when you only get about 5000 visitors per month is not math that can make any sense whatsoever. And the fact that the MS Paint Heccubus still exists at all is a disgrace to my own character, so there's no way that I'm making some ridiculous dancing version of it to try and pull in five dollars from some easily-entertained internet denziens.

Now, I've stumbled across this topic by pure chance, but I 've been thinking of it recently.

I'd love to help. If somebody deserves at last some remuneration for endless hours of my amusement, then, for example Chefelf does.

And there is some american currency just sitting in my drawer - not much, mind you but an odd 100 dollars - leftover from a business trip six months ago. It is just sitting there and doing nothing. I would love to put it to good use, like setting the hydro bill for a friend.

I just can't seem to be able to overcome the problem HOW exactly shall I donate money.

I haven't got a credit card, and even if I had, forget it, I've heard enought about credit card frauds to enter my details via internet for some hackers to help themselves to whatever limit my credit card has.

I tried once a bank transfer to US, there was 300 dollars that I had to give one guy back. I believe in total I had to pay 100 $ on top of that for a bank transfer. Unless you are selling millions, it is simply too expensive. For my 100 dollats I would have to pay another 100 for the transfer.

I can, of course, resort to every immigrant ploy sending banknotes in the letter, but how dumb that would be?

My bank does not issue cheques that a bank in the US would clear. Or maybe shall I buy just some traveller's cheques and send you? But I suppose they can be nicked just as easily as banknotes.

Now, please tell me, how can I transfer the said 100 dollars. I am dead serious.

Yeah, I put up donations when I was in need of a new computer. I got about $40. I was pretty happy about it. Still, not a great way to make money.

2) Seriously...the gesture is appreciated beyond anything I can put to words.
3) I have no idea how you could send it. I'm not experienced with sending much in the mail aside from the odd CD, or a letter.

well there are a few ways to handle this..
a ) set up a pay pal or a micro-payment thing and prey.

b ) You could try selling stuff through like cafe press and tha like? I have that set up with my artwork, and well.. have sold nothing. So you have to add a 'and prey' to that too.

c ) sell your body to science. That is how the film 'El Mariachi' got funded.
