Yes we all know that cartoons kicked ass when you were a kid, but what about the kids of today, Having to make due with Pokemon, Yu gay Oh, and other crappy anime. What will make their life complete without the proper training we received when we were kids?

So are there any diamonds in the rough in this generation?

I gots a tiny list to make here, feel free to add to it:
The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
    Duck Dodgers

I for one am alarmed at the lack of good cartoons. Why is it that the toons of today suck ass and the toons of yesterday not suck ass?

So anyone have an answer to that question above or an addendum to the list?

I think he means the new half-hour Duck Dodgers cartoon. I only saw an episode or two of it, and I wasn't too impressed.

Spongbob was probably my favorite american cartoon to watch when I still had cable. It had some great grownup jokes hidden in it. The newest episodes I've seen though (Pranks-a-Lot and Spongebob Meets the Strangler) were pretty lameass. I'd have to saw that my favorite is the one with the cut and pasted picture of the 1920s Nosfaratu.

The rest of Nickleodeon's lineup (The last time I watched) was crap though. I'd love to strange the person that came up with Rocket Power. Yeesh. And Nick's live action shows make me feel like murdering someone ('That's So Raven!'...urge to kill...rising...).

I've always been kind of fond of Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995).

Just out of curiosity, do you mean certain crappy anime that airs on TV, or that you don't like anime at all? Not that I'm gonna bitch at you for disliking anime if you do. I just happen to like it, myself

Don't feel bad about it, Chefelf. I used to be a huge DBZ fan, until I lost my cable and had some time away from it. That gave me time to realize that what everyone says it basically true about it being a 30 minute grunt and yell fest. Not that the whole show is trash, as there are some great episodes hidden between the fights (Like when Piccolo and Goku learn to drive. I guess I just like the comedy episodes best). I still love Dragonball though, and I don't think anyone should be ashamed of enoying it.

I refer to the crappy anime that appears on tv after school.

I was there when it started with pokemon, it was actually pretty good, not as good as JI Joe, but still. But then it stayed for a few too seasons long and got too damn weird even for me (150 MONSTERS WERE FINE STOP ADDING MORE!!! yell.gif ). Now all the stuff on tv is going to hell in a hand basket.

I've seen a few peices of real anime and it's alright thumbsup.gif . But a cartoon about playing cards can only has one or two point going for it before it dwindles into crap tv. I was in the key demographic, being a avid player of M:TG, and even had a YGO deck (its a *meh* game) and I still thought that was a bad idea.

PS: the stuff on Adult Swim is alright by me though.

PS to PS the previous PS: Where did all the looney toons go? crying.gif

Ok, cool beans. I just thought I'd check, cause I know some people on the forums don't like anime, but if you do, you're ok with me biggrin.gif

Magic: TG too! Oh how I used to love that game. I didn't play so much after the Apocalypse expansion, mostly because I didn't have anyone to play with. Then they went and changed the game so much. I don't know if I could get back into it again now.

Anyway, back on topic. I loved the Spider-Man cartoon that was on around the same time as Batman: The Animated Series. They both seemed so cool and...I dunno, grown up. It's been awhile since I've seen either, but I'm guessing that while Batman is probably still a really cool show, Spider-Man probably hasn't aged as well. I remember they used CG cityscapes for while Spidey was swinging around the city, and even then, it was bad GGI.

Oh yes... Dangermouse Kicked major ASS! (Too bad you can't get it on DVD sad.gif )

Lets see.. There are three or four anime ones I watch now.. plus Robot Chicken. Also Family Guy which is making a come back on the 1st of May. (new episodes that is) As for good anime, it isn't stuff kids should be watching.. (And no.. not animated porn.. but Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In The Shell: Standalone complex, Fullmetel Alchmest, the Big O (ok so I'm like the only person on the planet that likes that one..), and Trigun.)

Oh I don't know.. there are too many really.. all I do is watch cartoons and food network now that techTv is gone tongue.gif (Well it is now G4TechTv, but they are dropping the TechTv I hear... because they already dropped everything that made techTv good)

I get annoyed by people who both like or hate anime. I hold you should judge a show on it's own merits. Anime is varied, some of it excellent, some of it complete shit. But it seems people don't seem to get that. They think it's all the same, and you find people either see the shit, and declare all anime to be crap, or see the good stuff, and declare anime to be superior to other tv. Either view annoys me.

Well, I'm not saying all anime is awesome. There's plenty of bad anime, just like there's plenty of bad in whatever people may like, wether it's american or japanese cartoons, and movies of all genres and nationalities. I'm just saying that I like anime in general. But you couldn't pay me watch Nuku Nuku TV (I love the OAV, but they took all the heart out of this one), Patlabor 2 (Sorry, Patlabor fans, but it makes me fall asleep), or lots of other things. As for judging a show on it's own merits, that's fine. But is there anything wrong with prefering a certain genre of film over others? If someone likes comedies, does that have to mean that they like every comedy ever made? No, and it's the same for anime.

Whoa, sorry, looks like I got a little defensive there. Sorry about that, Sime, but I hope I made my point anyway sad.gif

Didn't seem too defensive to me.
But is anime really a genre? I don't think so. To me it seems more an artform. A genre is a grouping irrespective of artform that has a similar point, such as action or comedy or horror. Artforms are a method of expresion that use similar traits to get across the point, such as novels, poems, movies etc. To me anime is more a description of artform then genre.

It is easy to say that I hate a movie because it is a romantic comedy without watching it. But to say I hate a given poem simply because it is a poem without reading strikes me as more closed mind. In the same respect, it seems allright to say that band x songs are automatically good as they only play your genre of choice, but to say that band x are automatically good because they have a trombone player seems odd.

Good point.

Now to the meat of the matter, all these cartoon shows you all mentioned kicked serious ass but i'm asking about the cartoons of today, the ones you can catch in the after noon or at saturdaymorning.

Ok, now to launch this thread back into tangentcy. Have any of you guys seen that new batman cartoon The Batman? They changed a lot of things about the old cartoon, mostly the style and they also added a token black cop. Thoughts.

Haven't seen the new one, the older one was class for the dark comic styling, and the bizarre batman of the future had a passable movie, purely for the joker stuff. (Providing all you do all day is skip lectures and watch TV). I can remember cartoon network showing nothing but looney tunes at one point.

Ah, those happy times when I paid the cable bill....
