i find the topic title of this thread offensive.

the catholic church is not like a cult at all!!!

they're more like the mafia but with more money, less morals, and a longer history.

smile.gif

Satanism is a religion BTW.

and quite frankly it's the least offensive one socially (to me). they have ideals that all aother religions could learn from. Satanists are pretty musch like budhists, but with orgies and better music.

they lost a little credibility with me when they let Marylin Manson join!!!

I guess I really should be ignoring you, but... wow. The Stupid contained in that statement really just came out of nowhere and sent my brain into a twitching gibbering loop for a good five minutes. Was that deliberate? Cos I honestly can't tell. You might want to put a warning up there.

Since the pope is someone we are supposed to listen to and believe to be infallible, if you are the anti-pope, doesn't that mean we should completely ignore you? Oh and pie bad, casserole good.

Rhubarb, since you express a desire to know why I am so eager to prove the church is a cult, I will tell you. In the thoughts of most religious people, cults and religions are two distinctly different things. If they realise this is crap however, it might just take them from the hideous darkness of religious thought and into the bright shining light of atheism.

Oh, I forgot an argument you made the last time I posted, so I will refute it here. If "the church is a religion by fucking definition" because the western concept of religion was started by the catholic church, how come society doesn't view religions such as hinduism and budhism as cults? They are extremely different concepts to catholism, unlike judaism and islam which are more or less the same. Not that they weren't considered cults at one stage, but the lovely concept of PC thought meant that had to change. Interestingly, this only seems to apply to ancient religions. Anyone starting a brand new religious movement now has to be starting on offshoot of an established religion or they will be instantly labeled a cult. Even if they are an offshoot, such as mormonism, they will still probably be thought of as a cult. If cults and religions are completely different things it should be possible for someone to found a new religion tomorrow. If brand new cults are completely different things to brand new religions, I would very much like to hear how they would be any different from one another in anyway whatsoever. They would both agressively seek new members, as you said only cults did, because neither would have any members at all if they did not.

I wasn't aware that satanism was considered a religion. I am quite impressed they managed to pull that off. They don't offend me any more than christians do. If I thought the bible was the literal truth I would certainly take satans side because all he really did was rebel against a dictator. Having said that, I have never met a satanist, and satanism sounds to me like something started by someone who wanted to shock their parents. Such people are generally wankers.

And the HTML was due to a rather irritating piece of software that seems to have infected my computer, which I cannot seem to get rid of, called NT search. It turns random words on a web page into links to look the word up in their search engine. It even turns individual words in links already on the page into links for their fucking site! If I click on the first word of the link, I get taken to the intended page. If I click on the random word selected by NT search, I go straight to their fucking search engine. If there is any justice in this world, when the man who designed this thing dies, he will be chained up in the lowest dungeons of hell, with a catherine wheel tied forever to his penis.

And yes, the churchs view of lust is especially offensive to me. This was caused by endless nights of sexual frustration when I was thirteen. That is until I came to my senses, realised the church was talking bollocks, and started masturbating furiously.

I haven't read most of this thread, so forgive me if I repeat things said by others.

In popular usage (regardless of the dictionary definition), a "cult" is identified by one characteristic, being the effort taken to insulate its members from the rest of the world. Most cults I have known do this by taking something everyone else does, and making a sin out of it, and then threatening excommunication for disobedience. Everyone in such an organization is an outsider whenever they are in the company of non-members, and their religion defines every moment of their dsaily lives.

The Catholic Church by that definition may once have been a cult, but now they don't excommunicate anyone, even if they have still outlawed remarriage after divorce, birth control, and abortion. The church is accepting of folks who have committed these sins, so long as they seek forgiveness. And they don't try all that hard to bring in new members, which makes them one of the least annoying major religions. The absolute least annoying being the Amish of Pennsylvania, cult though they are.

Voodoo Dog, you have been excommunicated from the Church of Pies. Anti-Pope is a term for a Pope that was not elected, at the same as there is a Pope that was elected, there have been several anti-popes that started off springs of catholism. However I am not catholic, I just like saying anti-pope. If I was an Anti-Pope I would have to take the name Pope Pius XVI, not Pope Pius I, so ha!

PS FOR THE PIETICAN!

Already proved the catholic church fits this discription nicely, read thread.

Already stated the catholic church does this via sexual relations, read thread.

Already stated reasons for this, and why they are still a cult regardless, read thread.

You do however make an interesting point when you say the church could have been thought of as a cult once, but is now a religion. I never thought of that. I suppose you could say all religious groups start out as cults, and mature into religions. But still, since most people think of religions and cults as completely different things, religion=fish cult=fowl, I still think my basic argument is true, because if this were the case, the distinction between cults and religions would be very, very thin to say the least.

And although you made a valid point, read the fucking thread wouldya? Its only 3 pages. And its quite good. Honest. Especially after my original annoying "Yahtzee Lite" style was swept away by the sweet, warm flow of piss coming from a certain MR Benjamin Croshaw. I read all 18 pages of the lemur vs puffin thing in one sitting.

how could you ignor me? especially after a statement like that.... smile.gif
(the budhist thing was a joke, yes... you can laugh now)

but seriously...
i've read the satanist doctrines and found them to basically be a bunch of hippies.
"don't hurt animals unless for food and clothing", "don't harm children", "accept lycanthropy into your life" etc. and yes i have met satanists.

the most satanic song of all time (according to Anton Lavey, it's founder) is that dawning of the age of aquarius song off the HAIR soundtrack...

Ignor the goths who think they are satanists, they're just trying to be 'evil'

When I looked through their stuff a year or so ago, I noticed that it was a lot more intelligent then Christianity, but they realise that, and the follows act smug and superior to others. As such, it seemed to me like a group of people who hang out to assure each other that they're better then everybody else.

Well, my experience with Satanists was with a bunch of dudes on a Satanist forum who said that Satan was an alien and that gold has magical properties and frankly I didn't understand most of the doctrine because it was convoluted as hell. But they were right into the whole devil-worship thing, except that Satan was apparently misrepresented by Christians, which I found hilarious. They also argued that gold in particle form is weightless somehow. They were strange people.

Rhubarb, this is so off to topic as to be on another planet, but I wish to ask for a favour, and I butt heads with you most often here. I recently got into a very strange debate in the lobby of chefelf.com. concerning porn sites and the most bizarre fetish to be found on the internet. I wrote several incredible witty comments(and yes, I do realise I'm banging my own bongos here somewhat) and started to think they deserved a bigger audience than the horrible, horrible perverts who read this thing. So I slapped a few different posts together, re-wrote them to be more suitable for a general audience, glued on an introduction and a conclusion, and laughably classified the deformed little thing as a "Fullyramblomatic.com guest article". And since Yahtzee did a previous article about the horrible percentage of humanity known as furries, I started to get a mad notion that he might accept it.

"But what has that got to do with me?" I hear you cry. I'll tell you what. I tried to e-mail the whole sorry mess to Yahtzee, but for some reason my computer, sneaky cunt that it is, absolutely refuses to comply. I can still work these forums though, so could I please send the thing to you in the form of a personal message so you can show it to Yahtzee? Pretty please? If nothing else, I'm sure you'll enjoy the sight of your boyfriend reading my article for two minutes, sitting immoble for an additional two minutes, printing the thing out on paper, ripping it to shreds and flushing it down the toilet, constructing a crude version of me (or at least my avatar) and burning it in effigy, somewhat amusing. I won't say what the most twisted kink on the internet (whose followers make furries look like sane decent people) is here so I won't spoil the surprise, but just in case you're getting worried, its completely legal. Although it shouldn't be. And just to seal the deal, I'd like to say that, judging by your avatar, you are stunningly beautiful. NOT YOUR CURRENT ONE, I can't add speedily enough, but the one before this.

Oh shit, I just realised that I have yet to send a personal message yet so I might not be able to do it. I'll try to send you one now. If this doesn't work i'll have no option but to sit in the corner and mourn the wasted ten minutes of my life I will never get back.

Thank you so much. Once you read this you will either drop to your knees and start worshiping me, or kick me in the balls so hard that my future children will be born bruised.

Enjoy.
