[Minor spoilers for 5 days a Stranger]

I'm up to Day 3 and now need to make the matthew detector.

I have gotten the diary from Matthew's room, another diary from the other bedroom, family history from the library, newspaper report, and the article. Of course, I need to read all of them. However, when I choose the "look" option and then click on one of them, only a series of boxes appear, and no text. Am I doing something wrong?

Once you read all of them, Trilby will say he has enough information and may find a book about Matthew's body in the library. I found the white book, but once again when I "look" at it, no text appears. Thus, I have no procedures on how to make the Matthew-detector.

Does my game have a glitch?

And about the matthew detector: I used a walkthrough and I have tried to make it: I put the teddy bear with the cord, and then that with the stick. I dipped that in the salt and waved it over Matthew's bed. Still, even after I wave it over the bed, all I have is a salty bear+stick, not a detector.

What am I doing wrong with this?

Sounds like a bug to me. Haven't played it in awhile though.

Sounds liek one to me as well just played 5 days to check and I didnt have any probs...
