(1) Both TPM and AOTC sucked primarily because they were totally useless. Anakin Skywalker's story simply did not require a trilogy to tell and GL simply made it a trilogy because, well, that's what he did the first time around....wouldn't you screw around for two movies for 3 billion dollars in revenue?

Amazingly, Anakin Skywalker's story really isn't even spread out amongst the three movies....the entire story is crammed right here in ROTS! Both TPM and AOTC were just killing time.

(2)Lucas was holding the good shit in for this. Old George Lucas (no relation to Young George Lucas) might be a pompous prick, but he's not an idiot. He understands the idea of "rising action" when telling a story, which just means that the story gets bigger and grander with each successive event. We all know there was nothing grand about TPM or AOTC (well, the music in TPM and that hurricane planet in AOTC, but let's not get too picky), and that's because Lucas was saving ALL the good shit for this. The best fights, the best planets, the best action tricks....it's all been pent up like a kid reading porn in a classroom. And ROTS is like what happens when that kid gets into his bedroom after school.

(3) Obi Wan vs. Anakin. Hey, no matter how much Old George Lucas has fucked up the relationship between these two, it's still going to be bad ass. Just watching the two actors competing with each other on the DVD documentary lets you know that there is just some primordial rivalry between these two guys. No matter how miserably their dialogue and interactions have conveyed that so far.

(4) I read the story. It kicks ass. I read it back in November, and I've read it again since the books were released last week. It's awesome. It cannot NOT be awesome. Even if Old George Lucas is doing his damndest to make it just like AOTC, it will still be awesome. There WILL be fodder for critics, most notably Anakin's actual reason for turning to the dark side, but it will be cool anyway.

So no matter how pompous Old George Lucas is, no matter how weird it seems to think that the same guy could make a TERRIBLE movie three years ago and then a GREAT movie now, no matter how much people will accuse you of being trendy or whatever....ROTS will just be awesome.

The only question is whether it will be great or GREAT.

I really hope you are right...
But somehow I am not sure about GL not being an idiot. blink.gif

Yes, I also hope you are right, I too am trying to look at the bright side of the whole Episode III thing, and like ive mentioned before, all the things we need to know will be in Episode III, forget the last two, it all depends on how well Lucas executes it..

I had great hopes after seeing the trailer too. But after reading the script and checking out the spoilers, I have to say that it's highly unlikely it's gonna be any good. I agree that the potential for a great Star Wars movie is there, but hey, it's Lucas.

For me, the reason and execution of Anakins fall is what makes or breaks this movie. It's the most important part of RotS in my opinion, and judging from the spoilers, it sounds just horrible. Sorry about the cynicism... innocent.gif

i am hoping that the movie is a great
but knowing Lucas i am now hoping that the potential crappyness would be drowned out by overall violence of the empire forming jedi's being killed and Anikens coalescence with the dark side

I've been reading the book and unlike previous SW novelizations, I'm reading this one as if the book came before the movie. So I'm hoping that the book, as OK as it is (Stover's craft is good in some places, great in some places, fine most of the time), I know the movie is going to be better visually than the book is psychologically.

Me too, I'm hopeful. But I was for the previous two, and I like both OK. Just OK.

Penguins and explosions! That's what I want.

I think R.A. Salvatore made a valiant effor in the Attack of the Clones novelization but he didn't have much to work with. What he seemed to be doing was tying up loose ends and explaining things that were kind of stupid. While he did his best you can't fault him for the crappyness of the plot.

I am SO tempted to read this book (it's on display at the Borders right by work, tempting me from the outside window) but I really want to experience it in the theatre. sad.gif

It's not possible for Episode III to be good. I'm sorry it's just not.

I don't think I'll be experiancing it in the theater. Given my oath to never watch another movie Published or Directed by GL, I think that it would be best for me if I was just to wait till it comes out on video (NOT DVD) and watch it at home in my continually stated movie marathon.

I'm going into ROTS with the expectation that it will be high slapstick comedy, along the lines of the Dungeons and Dragons movie. I'm looking to laugh at how poorly done it will be.

With the exception of ESB, each movie has been progressively worse than the one before it. I predict this movie will not break the run.

Having read the script, I can only conclude that Lucas intends this to be a World Wrestling Entertainment rip-off. Cheap heat, squash matches and manager versus manager with an undercard....its all there. Even the feud that's been building for two movies! Wrestlemania should have it so good.

I hope (responding to original post, not the thread) that you are right.

It's just interesting you used a masturbation metaphor - it might have been more accurate than you intended.
