Maybe it's an adjective. Han was a good guy in general. Jar-Jar was a general buffoon.

SW has gone downhill in general. (general agreement)

Han Solo had the title of "Commander" in ESB. It should've stayed at that. Then "commander" wouldn't necessarily be a rank, just that he "commands" the mission.

I'm reminded of a little insight I had about next generation Star Trek a while back - it's really a kid's fantasy of what the Navy is like.  Everyone's an officer.  (How many times did you see anyone on the ship who wasn't?)  It's possible to become an officer just by hanging out on the bridge long enough (q.v. Wesley Crusher.)  My dad actually *was* in the Navy (Korea) and he thought Star Trek TNG was ridiculous - and it is.  Star Wars with its legions of Generals is just as bad, maybe worse.

yeah,
ensign is the lowest rank on a starfleet ship.
ensign is the lowest Commissioned Officer rank in the navy.

not even warrent or petty officers...

Re the officers in Star Trek I had always assumed that modern technology made basic ratings and crewmen redundant - so the only people kicking around were the officers.

As for the rebellion and its leaders- it seems to be very informal... they have a degree of hierarchy, but its largely based on being trusty and handy in a fight rather than any formal chain of command... I don't think the rebellion has a court-martial system or detailed regulations, and given that non-military semi-political people don't seem to be above rallying fighter pilots I always considered them more of a militia than a military.

As for General Jar-Jar... well, Jar Jar to begin with sucks, making him a military leader and political representative was just the icing on the lame cake.

General Kenobi on the other hand - I had always thought that Jedi would be assigned duties, and before the prequels came out I thought he would have been Alderaans military advisor Jedi.

what about, when you beem people aboard an enemy ship?

i'd want to send the grunts...
the enterprise of TNG have an android and a kilingon... but what about everyone else?

ensigns have duties... navigational crap and so on...
you want at least a company of space marines training in the lower decks for when the occasion arrises!!!

Of course the Rebellion has no court martial system. They're anarchists.

General Kenobi on the other hand - I had always thought that Jedi would be assigned duties, and before the prequels came out I thought he would have been Alderaans military advisor Jedi.

That's the way I kind of saw it. Especially reading Lucas' early scripts of ANH (The Star Wars) where the "Dai Nogas" (Jedi) would pledge their allegiance to a planet and basically led their troops. The planet described in the book was a lot like what Alderaan should've been, and the Kenobi-like character led the troops and was fighting against the empire. It bascially made the Jedi-like characters like ranger-like characters. They weren't centralized like they are in the PT, and the "Legion Lettow" (Sith) were relentless in destroying the Dai Nogas.

I've started illustrating these old scripts (with some tweaks and alterations) for my own amusement.
