Just thinking, what with Ep 3 on it's way and Ep 2 ending with Doku taking the plans to where ever...

how long does it take to build this fucking thing? huh?!?

between the end of ANH and the begening of ROTJ the second one is almost complete...

does it really take them 20+ years to build the first one?

the technology of the SW world has somewhat plateaud considering the lack of significant advancement over a few thousand years...
So it is only fair to asume that both Death stars took roughly the same time to build. (sure maybe the second one would have been quicker considering the experience of building the first one but then the loss of the original, aside from the loss of personel, would have been a major setback in rescorces and tactical supplies... Darth Vader was alone in space in a tie fighter... so it would have taken him a while to get to the nearest Imperial Embassy or Star Destroyer fleet. He would have had to maintain radio silence while excaping considering the large number of rebel ships in the area...
So either way, the whole "DS2 would have taken less time to build" is right out!!!

so we are suppose to beleive that they build the DS arounf the end of Ep #3.

that being the case... why does it take over 20 years for anyone to finnally test it?
Motti says something in ANH that leads us to beleive the DS only recently became operational at that point.

so what happened? not enough clonestruction workers?

huh? huh.gif

The Geonosians are like WPA.... After that they used solely Imperial help to build the DS2, but since they cut corners and did shoddy work, the second one was even easier to blow up than the first (I mean, look at how it was constructed--that's TOTALLY government work!)

But seriously, you're absolutely right! Showing the Deathstar plans in Episode II and then Showing it being built in Episode III is totally fan-boy wet-dream, and here it is WE, the basher's accused of being catered to... where? how?

I didn't want to see the DS being built! I didn't want a DD2. These are totally the acts of a desperate man scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Flying Ferret

Battle for the Galaxy--read the "other Star Wars"

All I know is I haven't seen the real prequels yet.

Hm. Stupid, hand-waving explanation: they started building two of them at the same time or roughly the same time in different places. Like John Hurt's character says in Contact, "Why build one when you can build two for twice the price?"

Or maybe the ROTJ Death Star is actually the third one. They built the first one in time for Episode III but it gets blown up in remarkably the same manner as the second and third ones. After all, Lucas used the "ship blowing up from the inside" trick in three movies already, what a fourth going to matter?

Isn't it sad? The Death Star destruction sequence in Star Wars is still an exciting piece of cinema despite the outdated special affects (and the fact that it looks remarkably like a World War II movie.) Now Lucas is making the Death Star almost into a running joke. Sad.

Have to agree. Using the Death Star twice just seemed like the end of ideas syndrome.

Anybody here play that old boardgame 'Freedom In the Galaxy'? In that Star wars rip off, the Emperor has several 'Atrocity' level weapons besides the 'Death Star'.

All Lucas had to do was come up with some other cool invention that had to be stopped. A giant robot for crushing entire cities, a cybernetic asteroid worm for eating the rebel fleet....anything!

Having the Death Star plans show up in the prequels doesn't bother me that much. its a flash in the pan compared to all the other pandering that's in there. What's one more? 20 years sounds acceptable. The manpower and resources necessary would have made a second DS unlikely, so soon, unless they had Star Trek matter replicators.

Maybe they had started bruilding the second Death Star before the first was destroyed.

First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?

Their building the Death Star in Episode III - Stupid mongrel dogs...
Having the Geonosians plan to build the Death Star was a stupid idea to begin with - especially since the Death Star has all those handy big corridors for people to walk around in and lifts for those of us who can't fly , and why would the Geonosians need a planet-destroying battle station in the first place- but BUILDING THE DEATH STAR IN EP 3!
If it took 20 years to build it - why did it take 20 years for the rebels tolay their hands on the plans, and why didn't the imperials temper the design flaws out with all the time they had.
Seriously, it's a really bad idea.

I think there were funding problems and beaurocratic madness going on. In ANH though the senate is destroyed so Palpatine now has full control and can get his work done faster without the paper work.

On the subject of the DS being in the prequels at all I think that's bullshit. It might be acceptable to have shown it in the third movie near the end, but to bring it in at the middle of ep2? Bullshit. That just smacks of Lucas' new childish

"AUDIENCE AUDIENCE LOOK WHAT IIII MADE!!!!!!1111~~~~"

The first instance of this was slinging Jabba into episode 4, and now he's just beating us over the head with everything he has ever made. Somehow I bet he tries to fit in R2 getting the deathstar plans too.

The damn stupid cicada flicked on his little holopod too, in a smug "If they found out what we are planning to build THE DEATH STAR they'd destory us oh I said the loud bit quiet and the quiet bit loud oh look my holopod's on silly me"

Then we'll probably have Palpatine adressing the smiling young men who grow up to become General Tagge and Admiral Motti silhoutted by the Death Star...

actually, and i have said this before, if i had a death star and some young punks blew it up, i would totally build another one.
(my second one would have had big spikes all around it and an atomic engine, and would destroy planets by ramming into them, or as i said before: just the primary weapon and a seat... but that's not important right now)

as long as the repressed masses are paying for it, fuck it, why not?

i just don't think 20 years followed by

"20 years sounds acceptable. The manpower and resources necessary would have made a second DS unlikely, so soon, unless they had Star Trek matter replicators."

considering how much went into it and all, combined with this argument makes the idea of simultanious building imposible.

firstly, if they were building it at the same time, that means that the second DS was also taking 20 years, and therefore was no where near ready!!! making everyone idiots for standing around on such a big target...

secondly, they would have had the first complete sooner if they didn't waist resources on trying to make two... i mean, if the ingredients for a sandwich are coming in bit by bit as they become available, and you feel like eating two sandwiches, you're not going to sit there waiting until you have enough for two, you'll make one, eat it, then have another later...

finally, they keep refering to it as the second death star, the new death star, the more powerfull deathstar...etc. not the 'back-up' death star...

to make things worse, the ROTJ novel suggests that DS2 was "twice the size" of DS1!!!

It never actually looked any bigger though - The fleet didn't exactly look insignificant next to it, and the approach scenes into the hangar didn't have the 'giant swallowing fly' feel the Millenium Falcon entrance had in Star Wars - also when the original Star Destroyer went to say hello to the original death star it looked tiny - while the skeletal Death Star Take 2 appeared much smaller when they put it next to the fleet.
Also, the original was fininshed and shiny and people were having meeting on board it before it was declared operational - simply because it's enormous size made a complete diagnostic time consuming - while we were supposed to believe that the thing that looks like a burnt up Ford Cortina on the highwayside was fully armed and operational.
As for building two at once - the Death Star would have to have been built with some degree of secrecy while the Senate and the Republic had any power left at all, or the Jedi for that matter - two Death Star stands out a whole lot more than one, so I dont buy conncurent construction.

In a Comic, namely "Dark Forces: Soldier for the Empire", Tarkin and Lemelisk start building the Death Star 3 years before the Battle of Yavin, and they were the ones planning it as well.
But it's just Expanded Universe, so whatever... rolleyes.gif

Maybe DS Dos was a Barend style deal. just a hangar, mess hall, shiiter, throne room, and main gun.
