The blockade was legal, the invasion was illegal. But apparently, all they have to do to make ilegal is to FORCE the queen to sign the treaty under pain of death and torture her people into submission.

What wonderful logic, eh?

Yeah, that never made sense. Even if they had, don't you think a whole frickin' planet, guards, handmaidens, etc., etc. wouldn't say, "Hey, she was forced to sign it."

It is some of the worse plotting EVER for a movie. Lucas sets up a plot point, but never thinks it through to the end. If I do this, then this happens...

What makes it worse, is it so inconsequential anyway... why do we care... and that's the thing. In interviews when asked about it, Lucas says we shouldn't care... but if we don't care, then why should we want to watch the rest of the film? Man, my blood has been boiling again lately.... I just want to right the ultimate rant, but know it would only be filled with curse words....

I'll have to read through the Chef' list again.

Battle for the Galaxy--read the "other Star Wars"

All I know is I haven't seen the real prequels yet.

Heh, Helena you basically did the "Extended Edition" of my dislike of the Old Republic that is why I hate AOTC. I figured I'd bring it up once I had that posted, since its in AOTC that I really start to get tired of the complete stupidity in the government of the galactic senate.

I basically reduced the whole rant to a paragraph, for simplicity's sake. But you touch on a lot of things that irritate me about the whole prequel trilogy - the sense that nothing's lost by the Empire taking over the Old Republic.

Is Lucas saying that a Republic form of government is inferior? Is he trying to prep us for Empire by showing how much "better" it is?

I just don't get it.

The Trade Federation are real head-scratchers. They're disputing taxation of their trade routes, which makes sense, but they apparently have a vast navy to impose blockades with. This never made sense to me. Weapons are expensive, and a business concern like the Trade Federation shouldn't have spent eleventeen hojillion "credits" on battleships and droid armies unless they planned to get some use out of them. Why do they have armies? Are the space lanes so unsafe they have to escort trade ships? Do they make a habit of getting good trade conditions at gunpoint?

On top of that, the Senate is unable to conclude that a military blockade, long considered an act of war by every historical standard, is illegal. The Trade Federation is essentially usurping their position, using force to implement tax policies that should be the Republic's business, and they do nothing. But since they have no military to oppose it with, maybe debating is the best they can do.

I agree with Helena that if the Republic has no military, can't reach consensus on even the most clear-cut of issues, depose leaders on a whim, and give its chancellor dictatorial powers with a simple majority vote, it's inexplicable that it would have lasted ten years, let alone ten thousand.
