Deodorant producers are enjoying the sweet smell of success in Norway. Once again, the country leads the world in consumption, especially of the deodorant stick variety.
"I think I can say that Norwegians hold the world record in consumption of deodorant sticks," says Anne Britt Carr, head of Christian Dior in Norway.
Carr, who's compiling her company's sales statistics for last year, says spray deodorants are most popular in most other countries.
"We have, though, a completely special tradition involving deodorant sticks with luxurious scents," Carr said. "It seems to be one of the few luxury articles that the masses allow themselves here."
The Dior boss stressed that perfume and cologne best-sellers in other lands are gaining market share in Norway. But deodorant remains on top.
"My colleagues in France ask me, what do Norwegians do with all those deodorant sticks," she laughed. "Eat them?"
She added that some of the deodorant sticks are produced almost exclusively for the Norwegian market.
