Chef,

What are the spoiler rules for ROTJ? Is there a separate place I don't know about?

I just got the novel, so the cat's out of the bag officially. But I don't want to wreck it for anyone who cares to be surprised when they see the movie.

I know we tend to gripe about the possibility that ROTS could redeem EP 1 and 2, but I'm always hopeful. I'm just looking for penguins and explosions. (A reference to the Muppet creators who simply put penguins and explosions into their skits when couldn't get it to be funny on its own.)

Exposition and plot development? Who needs those? Just give me stormtroopers and star destroyers.

As do I. biggrin.gif
Have you finished reading it? What is your opinion of the novel?

I've been exposed to all the ROTS spoilers, so far, and have seen nothing there that convinces me that this is going to outdo Empire or Hope.

What, am I to prejudice anyone before they've even seen the movie?

The novel is very Matthew Stover -- mater-of-fact, blunt, to the point. It's high on ideas and internal dialog in terms of sharing motivations and feelings of characters definitively. No real room for interpretation. It's clear that he's peppered GL with endless questions and leaves little room for interpretation in the prose. There's very little ambiguity.

I haven't read the whole book; only read a few particular sections which answered some of the personal questions I had about the plot. And at that, I was surprised that certain events took place at particular points during the plot. I'd expected some events more toward the beginning of the movie.

As he did with Shatterpoint, he's expanded more knowledge of Jedi sword fighting by defining particular Jedi with particular styles. He doesn't go into a blow by blow account of the lightsaber fights, but talks in broader terms of the basic events that happen during the course of the action. The script will be a little more illuminating as to GL's more direct meaning behind particular actions. For example it will say something like Dooku felt fatigue as he continue to battle Anakin (in AOTC).

The novel isn't as literary as Alan Dean Foster's version of ANH. None have been since. A shame, in my opinion. (I have so say though that I haven't really liked ADF's writing either, and only give ANH any credibility because it contained descriptions that weren't tainted by today's transvisualization of cinematic creations. There was less pressure to capture the visuals as there was to capture the idea of SW.)

It's a very fast read, and I'm kind of hesitant in wrecking all of my enjoyment of the movie in a single evening. I also got the Art of ROTS and it's very captivating visually. But I've always found the art very compelling, sometimes more than scenes in the movie. That might happen again.

Will people like the plot? Haven't thought it through... yet. I'm really looking for the adventure of ANH. In media res. Didn't have a clue what what it was all about, but I sure did enjoy the ride. Don't think I'll be able to say that about ROTS, but I'm hopeful. Perhaps naively so!

Nick, feel free to spoil the movie in its entirity for me. I live in the Middle East, so ROTS won't actually be released this May for me, it'll take a few more months for it to reach this country.

That being said, I've changed my mind about actually going to the movies, but rather buying the movie on video as soon as I can. I get to pay George less money that way.

Thanks. smile.gif

I saw the hardback today. On page one of a sort of prologue, it read something akin to: "What happened occured a very long time ago, so nothing is going to change."

right.

I put the book back on the shelf, face down. (the art on the back is nice, I guess.)

You're right. The letters are still slightly visible.

I am using the spoiler code though. And it is very cool. smile.gif
