Has anyone else played it? I bought it on Gamecube for $40 US ($10 cheaper than normal) a few days ago and the Gamecube version has Shao Kahn and Goro as selectable characters. It's got some pretty deep combat, with each character having two normal fighting styles and a style with a weapon. The combos are kind of hard to do, as you have to press all the buttons in the sequence quickly and not in real time (don't know if that makes sense.) The main flaw is the stupid Konquest mode, where you play as some loser and train as all the characters while collecting stuff and running through N64 quality environments. You need to play through konquest mode and then do more once you finish to unlock everything, which sucks. I haven't had a chance to play 2-player yet but I'm sure it's pretty good. There's also puzzle kombat, which is like Puzzle Fighter 2, and then chess kombat which is like chess but instead of being able to think ahead and use logic, all you have to do is be good at Mortal Kombat. They're both ok as mini-games, but don't get much play time. I reccomend it.

I have not enjoyed a MK game since MK2. The developers got really lazy and slapstic for about 5 years after MK2 came out.

I've played a MK on Xbox, and found the controls to be a bit odd. I'm not really in too fighting genre any more. I use to be all over it, SF2 turbo and MK rocked my world for at least 4 years. (off and on)

Then, fighting games took a serious hit with the marvel capcom games, then after thatthe 3d fighters took hold and I never really liked any of them (save Soul Calibur)

I remember Killer Instincts, that game was fun for a bit, but nothing will ever match the greatness of Mortal Kombat one and SF2 turbo.

N64 quality environments.

Midway is a really cheap company. They've made games with graphics that are so bad that you'd think no professional company could be guilty of such shit. MORTAL KOMBAT GOLD on N64 is the worst game ever made. It was so lame and hacky, the whole thing made me sick.

I was not all that impressed with the Xbox version graphics. I think Soul Calibur on Dreamcast is a better game for fluidity of movement and graphics.

I haven't played the new one, so discounting that, I thought the series went downhill after three. The first three games were mostly the same thing, but in four and on they got too technical. Back in the day, all the characters were pretty much the same, except for the special moves. As such, you could pick the game up without much trouble. Lately, they've gone over the top in making things as complex as possible, and the gameplay became more 'just hit out the pre-made combos otherwise you don't stand a chance'. Strangely enough, I actually quite liked the plot behind it. Perhaps its just nostalgia now, but I thought it was quite good. Mortal Kombat Trilogy was in my opinion the best.

Well, I haven't seen Deception in action, but after playing Deadly Alliance I was offended. That trainwreck doesn't deserve to be called a video game. I may get a chance to check out alliance soon though.

Soul Calibur II is by far the second greatest fighting game next to Street Fighter II (Not alpha, turbo, or whatever other stupid gimmicks they added on to milk money from the teats of the obessed.) The only problem is that I played Soul Calibur II for two months straight with my friend when I bought it, for at least 3 hours a day, so now I lose interest in it much faster. :-/

The game you really should be looking out for is Guilty Gear. My friend got a hold of it from a friend and that game just blows my mind, it's all the good things that a 2D fighting game should have. The arsenal of characters is good and it's no problem to just pick up and throw out killer combos.

That said, I adore Soul Calibur II, I haven't played a fighting game for eons that has made me love it as much as this one, and it's just joyful when a friend (or a girlfriend) finds an attack they THINK they can use to beat the snot out of you without getting hit by just doing it over and over again, and then you pull out your magic character and bash them across the forehead with a sword.

Exactly my problem with Super Smash Bros. Melee.

I agree that MK3 was a piece of shit, I've never played 4 but I know it got mixed reviews. The slapstick is toned down as they've gotten rid of everything but fatalities and added hari-kiris (suicide moves).

Was MK Gold really that bad? It shouldn't have been any worse than the N64 version of MK4, because as I understand it was just MK4 with added characters and environments.
