I don't think any of us would ever be able to agree on a favorite song, but beauty is a universal aesthetic principal, so I was thinking maybe we could try to come to a consensus on the most beautiful song we know of. For instance, my favorite song would be "I am the killer" by Thursday, but for pure harmony and beauty of the music and lyrics you cant really go with that.

For that I'd have to nominate Hands that Built America by U2. The opening is powerful but understated, with the delicate percussion sounding like I imagine teardrops would hitting the ground. It has a wonderful tone that dosnt inspire sadness despite being almost mournful.

We'll never ever ever ever ever reach a consensus on 'the most beautiful song' ever. For one thing, beauty has many faces. Can it be loud and abnoxious but still be beautiful? i say so.
Music is beautiful in general, even if it could be described as 'ugly'.
I guess the point of all that is, this is too broad a question for me. Even more broad than any 'favorite song' question.
Kay, forget about my useless rant. i'll name some stuff:

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Bjork - 'Isobel' (today)
Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin AND Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Jimi Hendrix - 'Little Wing'
Fiery Furnaces - 'Birdie Brain'/'Turning Round'
Sonic Youth - 'Diamond Sea' various songs scattered about various albums

this is such a feeble and unfinished list. It completely ignores jazz and orchestral/chamber/ensemble/etc works and just about everything under the sun. good luck, everyone else.

I can't stand U2, there's no raw emotion in there, it looks so fake.

My favourite songs:
System of a Down- Chop Suey
Nine Inch Nails- Heresy
Rob Dougan- Clubbed to Death
Black Sabbath- War Pigs
Weird Al- The Night Santa Went Crazy

Shiina Ringo - Yami ni Furu Ame. I don't know what the hell the lyrics are, since it's Japanese, but the composition of the song is fucking genius. Also, possibly

Soundgarden's Like Suicide, and hmm... what else is very aesthetic?

The Beatles - While my Guitar Gently Weeps

My original post was kind of rushed, so here's a better idea of my ideal "beautiful" songs:

Jimmy Eat World - "Hear You Me"
Antony And The Johnsons - "The Lake"
Johnny Cash - "Hurt" (the Nine Inch Nails original is up there too)
Tiger Army - "Outlaw Heart"
Apocalyptica - "Bittersweet"
Bright Eyes - "Don't Know When But A Day's Gonna Come"
Sonic Youth - "Unmade Bed"
My Bloody Valentine - "Loomer"
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Maps"
Sigur Ros - pretty much anything, really.
Beck - "Guess I'm Doing Fine"
DJ Shadow - "Giving Up The Ghost"
Aphex Twin - all of "Select Ambient Works Vol. II"
Interpol - "NYC"
Joy Division - "Isolation"

God, I can't do this. There's far too much out there that can be classified as "beautiful". I mean, there are people who think power ballads are beautiful, and then there are the people who consider atmospheric stuff to be beautful, and then there's a ton of stuff in between.

I just found this thread. This is not a comprehensive list. Some of this meets the "grinning for minutes because I can't believe how beautiful this music is" category.

Something, The Beatles

Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd

Distant Sun, Crowded House

All of my heart, ABC

That whole closing sequence from The Who's Tommy

The Promise of Living, from The Tender Land by Aaron Copeland

This Upper Room choral piece I can't track down.
