I vote other because I don't see one as above the other. Nothing tops Mario 3 (or the music in Super Mario World), but nothing tops Sonic 3 & Knuckles either. I grew up on both, I have no prejudice. Though Mario's first 3D excursion was exponentially better than any of Sonics have been. Give me S3&K over the Sonic Adventures/Heros/Whatevers anyday.

Is this a debate on who's stronger, or cooler? And if it's stronger, are we including all of Mario's suits/powerups etc, or just how they are? And if it's natural ability, should Sonic's shoes be removed, as that would pretty much neuter him.

Well, I didn't think we were considering the Green Missile. I've been really pissed off at how cowardly Nintendo has made Luigi. He kicks more ass than Mario, damn it!

Actually, Sonic's shoes don't give him the speed. I don't know where that came from, but his shoes are just infused with power rings to keep from melting.

And 'cool' is completely subjective in this case. But Sonic's still cooler.

Most definately. In other forms of media Mario rules.

I would say that the Mario games were much more memmorable as well.

edit: Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt was the first (I think) console game I ever played.
