No more train journeys to read...

Trains are perfect to read. I read 'Haunted' (416 pages) in three days because I had lots of distance to cover... 2 Groningen - Rotterdam retours in three days... Normally I read such a book in 10 days or so...

i think most of you are awre of my propensity towards percieving a certian (real or imagined)...synchronicity of literarture. (im trying to find an intellectual-sounding way of saying, i like to find coincidences, espescially in books.) so anyway, in the interest of boring everyone, i offer this relatively brief treatsie. i dont know why, i just wanted to tell this irrelevent story.

months ago a fiend itroduced me to the works of michel foucault. a french philosopher and historical analyst. i proceeded on my own to read his history of sexuality, volumes 1-2 of 3. shortly after reading vol. 1, another friend presented me with foucault's pendulum. a book about conspiracies (real or imagined) within secret societes; the rosecrucians, templars, masons, etc.
me, being a typical american, intriniscally assumed there was only one foucault. i thought foucault's pendulum was about michel foucualt. turns out, it refers to the work of leon foucault, a 19th century...er, engineer, i guess is the word. btw, this is on topic since i am currently reading a book about leon, entilteld pendulum: leon foucault and the triumph of science, which i accidentally came across. the book is fascinating as it traces the attempts of earlier scholars to prove the rotation of the earth. which is what foucault's pendulum does.
anyway, there are tons of parallels one could draw between the brilliant minds of ages past, but the funny thing is that last monday i went to the history museum in indianapolis IN, and was pleased to discover they had on display a working replikca of foucault's pendulum!
long story short; these two foucaults, having so recently been completely unknown or obscure to me, have utterly dominated the dorky side of my life.

and oh ya, did you know machiavelli knew da vinci? biggrin.gif

Yeah, I noticed it too and I thought it was rather sweet to have Foucault introduced by a fiend.

Side note: Foucault's pendulum is hugely overrated as a book. I think Eco was just cashing in the success of the name of the Rose. The two later novels are even worse: The Island of the day before was bad enough, bu I could not wade even through a few pages of Baudolino.

What is brilliant though is Eco's collection of essays.
I believe they were published in English as "How to Travel With a Salmon & Other Essays", however, the literary translation of Polish title of this Italian book into English would be "The notes on the match box" volume 1 , 2 and 3.

On further inspection, half of "The Prince" is pretty good. The other half, the part where he uses the same references over and over again, gets pretty annoying.

ya, my roomate is a big eco fan. ive only read the one book, though. i was amazed at the amount of eco's research, and his prose was fluid, enjoyable. and of course i admire his ability to draw parallels. but it was "much ado about nothing". the ending was a let-down, thus rendering the whole book rather pointless. still, i cant help but be proud of myself for reading through it.

I finished Dead long enough by James Hawes and No Way To Treat A First Lady by Christopher Buckley... So, I picked up good ol' Dune again.

I WANT to read Thud!. Haven't got a copy yet. Terry Pratchett is a genius. He writes like a book every six months, and they're all among my favorite books.

Oh, and American Gods is the best book ever, but I can't give a summary, because that would ruin it for you. To say anything about the book is to spoil an interesting surprise. I can say that it's a fantasy book, though, and that it's about American gods.

See, you're being narcissistic. That was directed at everyone, not you.

And if you happened to read it... whistling.gif

Just finished Ring, just in time for Sunset and Sawdust by Joe R Lansdale to arrive. It should be good, all books that open up with a rape attempt and murder are good.
