I'm reading "Miss Smithers" by Susan Juby. It's meant for folks a bit younger than I am, but it's very well-written.

Since I am supposed to be writing a cover letter, I am, in fact, reading, Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. It's excellent and amazing. Also, Running with Scissors, Augusten Burroughs' memoir. Disturbing, but hilarious!

I've just finished Catch as Catch Can, a collection of short stories by Joseph Heller. They were pretty interesting, and I especially liked the ones based on Catch-22. And now I'm reading some stories by Edgar Allan Poe.
Head Gunner for the Royal Sloop Crimson Steel, Queen of the Dead, Instigator of Chaos and Confusion, Knight of the Grand Recursive Order of the Lambda Calculus, and also The Non.

Remember Emu's face, people; one day it's going to be on the news alongside a headline about blowing some landmark to smithereens, and then we can all sigh and say, "She was such a normal person".....
....We'd be lying though.

Hmmm.... I've been wondering if I should read Mein Kampf. I'm not a nazi or anything, I just think it would be interesting to read. Anyone know if it's worth picking up?

Having once been misguided enough to write a book report on it (not because I was a nazi, but because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about), I'd say it's worth reading with a semi-open mind. It does help you understand Hitlers logic behind the war, and is good for the analysis of modern propaganda.

However, don't take it seriously, and don't read it in public.

I thought that it was the most boring book I ever read. It just drags on and on. I had to finish it for school, that's why I even bothered.

No, it was for Accelerated Reading. Each book has a set point value, and you have a certian amount of points you need. So you can pick anything that has point value to read. Not that I need it, it's just that they think that if they make us read in each class it'll make kids magically like reading.

Eh. We just had to take turns reading a set book aloud in class... it kept us busy, I guess. I always finished the book in the first evening, and then spent the next few weeks reading other books hidden under my desk, whilst pretending to read the class text. Hilariously, I was always punished for this if I got discovered. Talk about school getting in the way of education.

We're doing that in summer school (blame my insane english teacher) right now. Most of the kids there have trouble reading, so we get through two pages in about 45 minutes. We have to stand up if we don't know where we are when it's our turn to read, so I have to pay attention.

I used to love that when I was in middle school. I'd get all competitive about it and check out nothing but designated books, then build up all my points to try and win little prizes and beat everyone else. What those prizes were, I have no idea anymore, but I was still ridiculously competitive anyway.

EDIT: Two pages in forty-five minutes?! Dear god that must be painful to endure! I remember getting pissed off by kids like that when I was in elementary school! If I had been stuck around people like that in high school I would have probably ended up bashing their heads in!

Literacy is something to be cherished.

ADDITIONAL: I found a copy of Better Than Life in a second-hand bookstore today. Wootage!

I rather like AR because it takes up class time. 20 minutes in every period.

I too was extremely comppetitive with it in elementary school. I remember that I got 250 points one year, and was only beaten by a super-smart girl that got 300. Grrrrr.....

Edit: Oh yes, I couldn't get pissed of at them for taking so long, cause I was asleep! smile.gif
