Quotes taken from a recent George Lucas interview....

INTERVIEWER: Are you happy with the way it all came out?

LUCAS: Uh, yeah actually im very happy, im very pleased with the whole thing.

INTERVIEWER: But most film critics hated Episode I and II. How worried are you that the critics are not gonna like this new movie?

LUCAS: Im not worried at all, they havn't liked any of them really, and especially they havn't liked the last two, so, hey! it can't get any worse, hehehehe!

INTERVIEWER: Did you not say ever to yourself, well, maybe they had a point with this, or with that?

LUCAS: The point is!, uhh, its like if you paint your house white and somebody comes and says that should be a green house , well, fine but I wanted to paint it white, I don't think theres anything wrong with painting it white, I dont think theres anything wrong with me for painting it white, maybe it should be a green house, but I didn't want it to be a green house, I wanted it to be a white house.

INTERVIEWER: What if someone else, beside you, came to you and said "I want to make Episode VII", Could you see that happening?

LUCAS: No, There is no Episode VII

CHANGE IN TOPIC: LUCAS' FUTURE MOVIES

INTERVIEWER: You said to somebody that "im gonna go of and make these art films that nobody is gonna wanna watch"

LUCAS: Yeah, I've earned enough, I've worked enough to be able to fail for the rest of my life, and thats what im gonna do.

INTERVIEWER: Thats some ambition.

LUCAS: Well, its what you worked for in the end.

INTERVIEWER: Its a little weird.

LUCAS: Well not really, I dont't think everything should be this big, blown out uhh super uhh kind of movie, that Iv'e stumbled into, is definitely not what i've meant to do, and um, iv'e just sort of followed it to the end.

INTERVIEWER: You called it a detour

LUCAS: It is a detour, a thirty year detour hehehehehe.

I think its safe to say that Lucas has finally gone insane, I mean films that no one is gonna want to watch wacko.gif wacko.gif

And his arrogance to the fact that he ignores anything anyone thinks just makes you want to punch him in the face!!!!!

any suggestians?

Oh, I don't want to say my suggestions of what to do with the guy.

but, FUCKIN-A! what a jerk! A DETOUR! He calls it a DETOUR! If Stars was such an inconvenience to him, he could've just remained a producer and passed it off to someone capable, but he's such a micro-manager, that he has to sit behind the animators and dictate every little move they make.

Infuriating! Just agonizing and infuriating.

a DETOUR!!!???

Youknow, he didn't even HAVE to make the prequels. He could've said, "sorry, guys it just ain't gonna happen."

Just for my own sanity, I want to know if this man actually EVER thanked the fans. Thanked them for pumping all that money into coffers, for loving his first films which basically allowed him to "fail."

What a pompous, arrogant, fat-headed, egotistical moron!!!

All respect is lost. I hope he "fails" horribly on "art films."

Flying Ferret

Battle for the Galaxy--read the "other Star Wars"

All I know is I haven't seen the real prequels yet.

Yeah, I mean if he wants to go and blow his money on shit house "art" films that no one would wanna see, then thats fine with me, but don't drag down the best SciFi saga ever into his "failure" movies list!!!!! yell.gif

Hrm.. I'm not sure how to take the whole thing. I can understand the detour remark. And at the same time I can understand why he wouldn't let someone else finish it all. (He is a control freak after all)

And there is nothing wrong with art house films... Hell THX 1138 has a certin art house feel to it all. (Although I've only seen the original.. not his recent changed one) I don't know how well he will be at it. BUT American Grafitti was art house if you think about it. At the time.. So who knows. I'm glad he is going to put down Star Wars. I'm annoyed that he has said before he wants to remaster it all in some new 3D technology. (Chef elf has the link somewhere...)

I don't think he is insane, and i don't think he put down the um.. what did you call it? "the best SciFi saga ever".. and he certinly didn't put it in the failure list. Far from it.. as he has made enough that he can now make films that won't make any money and still be comfortable.

Anyway.. all I say is.. whatever.. Get to work on letting Speilburg do the next Indy movie, damn it! hehehe

The interview is from 60 Minutes.

And, it's really pathetic that all of you are are whining and insulting George over this. As if him saying that Star Wars was a detour physically harms you. Frankly, he can call it what he wants, he can do to it what he wants, and none of the crap you're spurting about him is to change what he wants to do.

Get over yourselves. If you think what he's doing to is horrible, don't watch it. Move on with your lives.

I've always thought GL is being a bit disingenuous with this comments about making movies "no one's going to want to see". I don't think he means to be, but he never struck me as an artist so pure that he cuts an audience completely out of the picture. He wouldn't show off so much in his current movies if he were. He needs an audience, badly.

Rubbish. Lucas should have picked him up on that(if indeed this is an accurate transcript of the interview).

Predictably enough, it wasn't accurate

QUOTE
"They haven't liked any of them, really, and they especially haven’t liked the last two," says Lucas. "It's like, hey, you know, it can't get any worse."

But doesn’t it hurt? "Oh, it always hurts. It hurts a great deal. But part of making movies is you get attacked, and sometimes in very personal ways," says Lucas.

It is accurate; it was a voiceover, so it wasn't spoken directly to him. So there wasn't a chance for him to respond to it in the interview.

But he did say "...They haven't liked any of them, really, and they especially haven't liked the last two..." (my emphasis).

Funny, considering ESB gets 97% or something on IMDB. There is a very clear line drawn between PT and OT among critics, wonder why they never discuss that particular fact with Lucas...

But early reviews of the OT were mixed. Then slowly they got canonised as classics and the many flaws were glossed over. Even so, both TPM and AotC received a lot of good reviews, particularly here in the UK. Give them 10 years, wait for the kids watching them now to grow up into film critics themselves, and I strongly believe general critical concensus will improve. Wait for the nostalga for the OT to die off, then we'll have honest, untainted responses.
