You all speak true; it's not just Jack. Norrington is different, and Elizabeth will send a man to his death, albeit with a kiss and a tear in her eye. The only character just as credulous and full of good natured heroism is Will, who as a result falls for the worst trick ever, perpetrated by the man whose life he saved only one movie back. Anyone who says it's the same as the moment in the first when Jack tells the pirates to kill Will, just not yet, I have to say in advance that I disagree. In the first, Jack was secretly communicating to Will as well as buying time so that he could save everyone's life (and yes, get his ship back). Damning Will to servitude and then working hard to muster up others to the same fate, it doesn't look as though Jack has any heroics on his mind. Grr, I know they wanted to tell a different story from the first. Awesome; now next time could they just use some different characters?

I for one think the "East India Trading Company" business is a big old cop-out. We all know who was the real terror of the Spanish Main. What, are we afraid this movie won't sell as well if our heroes have to face the Spanish? Having Spanish villains didn't hurt Zoro ...

Hey guys. Saw it last night and I think it sucked. I really liked the first one and can't understand what happened to the second one.

* It felt like almost 50% of the movie was "boring" action, boring in the sense that you know that none of the main characters are going to die so it isn't exciting at all. I mean, 4 fights with a large octopus? Swordfights between the main characters and Elizabeth screaming like a five year old?

*The characters all sucked. Lets look at the main female character: Elizabeth in the first movie was about to marry someone she wasn't in love with, then went after the man she was in love in, only to in the second movie fall in love with nr 3 after seeing him again for like 5 mins on the boat, and at the end she sacrifices him! Jeez what a bitch.

*Waay too much emphasis on Jack Sparrows comedy, like someone else noted.

Just plain boring.

On second thought, ok "fall in love" in Jack isn't really the case but the romantic thing they have going is annoying. smile.gif

I thought it was pretty good, especially the CGI. I have to agree, though, that Elizabeth Turner is total cunt and I was kinda hoping that she would become part of Davy Jones crew and start growing a mollusk out of the side of her face.

I'd just like to add that Norrington still has plenty of opportunity to show that he's got a grand design and is not a cad, so I haven't lost faith in him. But Jack was a prick this time around, for no good reason.

Meh, it was fun, but the only thing close to spectacular about it is the soundtrack. The whole thing felt contrived as a cash cow designed to piggyback on the first movie. The dog from the prison and the two comic relief characters from Barbossa's crew, the whole rum reference and many other narcicistic nods to the much better Black Pearl. The fight scenes were long and dull, and there was no sense of wonder and fear when Will encountered the sea-people from the Flying Dutchman that came from seeing Barbossa's crew's monstrous nature revealed under the light of the moon. Then there was the whole pointless guy with the crab for a head who was written in just for laughs. The whole thing was drawn out and slowed to a crawl with much repetative meandering due to the intentional design of writing the movie into two for even more box-office bucks.

The points made on the characters all shifting to trite shadows of their former selves is duly noted, and the East India guy is just boring as an enemy, and the Kraken failed to incite any sense of dread as a hated enemy. It was used wantonly by Jones when he threw a tantrum and couldn't get away. I also agree that we didn't need two battles with it in the span of ten minutes, one with another rum joke thrown in. At the end I guessed Barbossa would be returning, as he was the last money-maker not back from the first movie yet. I really should have guessed it when I saw that the monkey was still around, even though he was supposedly killed in the first one, and sure didn't act like he was still undead and faking. I suppose he'll have fallen over onto the pile of gold and re-cursed himself or something to prevent his death after he was off camera or something. *rolls eyes*

Sure, it was fun, but not much else for those not afflicted with Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom fanism. Just another formulaic movie designed with sales in mind. It pales in comparison to the first. I do need to give the soundtrack another listen, though.

Barend: It's true! He's a squid face! But I bet he plays the organ better than Cthulhu.

Civ: Yeah, I really was wondering about the silly rolling motif, too. Once was more than enough.

Yet another hamfisted blockbuster, bursting at the seams with CGI and totally lacking in plot or character development. I walked out of the theater depressed. Is this the best that Hollywood can do?

Aye.

I just rewatched the first one, and it is really good! The jokes, the plot, characters etc. Just an example of the sort of humor that was totally absent in the second movie:

Will: Where's Elizabeth?

Jack: She's safe, just like i promised. She's all set to marry Norrington just like she promised. And you get to die for her just like you promised. So we're all men of our word really. Except for Elizabeth who is in fact a woman!

smile.gif Rewatch the first movie guys.

I did rewatch the first one. Over and over. Several dozen countless times over the past three years.

What were you all expecting? A carbon copy of the first one? If that's the case then I have absolutely no hesitation in calling you a DUMB ASS! Not only does this never happen, but it would be horrible it if did! I don't go to see a sequel of my favorite movie for more of the same, I want to see it take a new direction! I want to see progression of the story!

Honestly, would Star Wars have been the same if Empire and Jedi were exactly the same as A New Hope? No! They would have sucked and you all know it!

It didn't suck, we're only in the middle of the story.

And what's wrong with the little jokes and references to the first movie? They brought those jokes back because those were some of the most popular bits! Tell me, how many times in over the past three years have you heard or seen someone ask, "But why is the rum gone?" or make a crack about someone being a eunuch? I bet you lost count in the first month, didn't you? (And I can guarantee you that Jar of Dirt love isn't going to die down anytime soon, either.) And I nearly choked during the jail scene when the prisoners seemed to be calling to the dog like in the first one and the ride, then they panned over and it was Elizabeth they were trying to reach (a wee bit more adult in this one, aren't they? tongue.gif ). And the little ones too, like the Governor breaking the candle holder, Jack mentioning the dress in his cabin, Jack's sudden flash of pure paranoia when Mr. Cotton's Parrot mentions walking the plank, those were brilliant! Just because it took a more serious turn doesn't mean it wasn't funny.

(One complains there's too much comedy, one complains there wasn't enough - just solid proof that you can't please everyone.)

And this bitching about CGI, I swear to god! I suppose you long for the good old days of bulky protruding zippers, laughable monster suits, and Ed Wood's octopus! What do you want from Hollywood, eh? What do you want? You don't even have to begin to answer that because I can tell you right now it's never going to happen. You don't like it, make your own damn movies, tell us how that works out for you.

...

...

...

I...I'm rambling and can't really think of a way to finish this off. To be continued when I can think
more clearly/one of you pisses me off/I finally get a chance to see it again.

On a lighter note: truly the Jar of Dirt was the REAL star of Dead Man's Chest.

Loved the Jar o'Dirt, but I'm still a little bit disappointed. That's no way to end a movie, that's just repeating the same mistakes they already made with the Matrix trilogy. It was just a series of mostly boring and unconnected events, not a complete adventure like the first movie. sad.gif

Gosh Jane, I suppose you liked it. I didn't expect a carbon copy of the first one, either. I just figured the sequel would have the characters from the first one. Like it would have a Captain Jack Sparrow who would not have considered sacrificing 100 unsuspecting strangers to save his own neck, but who would have calmly enbraceded the gallows after a series fo adventures wherein he had fought bravely for his friends. An Elizabeth who would not have handcuffed a man to a sinking ship, and a Will - actually, Will is still the same heroic guy. Woo hoo. The sword fights were still dull and the comedy where it existed was more slapstick than witty. Not that there's anything wrong with that; I like sight gags as much as the next guy. I just think that verbal gags remain in the mind longer, and so the first film was more charming. All of the verbal gags in the sequel were references to the first. Boo.

Let's see if that pisses you off. wink.gif

Number one at the box office again! $35 million. Just broke another record: fastest movie to make more than $300 million. Did it in 16 days, beating out Star Wars Ep III with 17 days. Nice.\

It's domestic total now stands somewhere around $322 million, with a worldwide total of $446 million. Very nice. And a movie that totally derserves the wave of success it is currenlty riding. Get it? Wave... ocean... pirates... huh, huh? Ahh, you don't get it. (<-- in best Peter Griffin voice)

I actually thought some of the POTC1 references were good, and I have to say that on the whole I liked the film. I don't have any problem with some of the immoral things the characters did because they all seem to work when put in context- Jack is going to be able to free Will and the others when he gets the key and Elizabeth is pissed off as hell at Jack because of his conniving and such.

I couldnt stand some of the battle scenes though which seemed to be overly spectacular and staged. "Well, a sword fight is nice, but lets add a water wheel and a gazillion zombies"

The sword fight on the beach between Jack, Norrington and Will was pretty decent though and I liked the way it was shot and the fact that it was fairly simple, even with Elizabeth's tantrum.

Some of the CGI I could have done without, but the final shot of Jack going into the Krakken was pretty good.

All in all I say 3.5 to the first one's 4 stars
