Even so, its something thats been on my mind ever since seeing TPM in '99. Both TPM and AotC, while sharing elements in common with the OT, have plots that are fairly dense. The main plot thread in fact, that Palpatine is Sidious and so is controlling everything, is only really hinted at. Compared with the OT, the PT does require a bit of mental dexterity which anyone over 15 wouldnt have to think about to get, but for the rest? Lucas has said a number of times that his films are meant for 10-14 year olds (or there abouts), but i've often wondered what a kid made of a line like
"Will you allow a commission to (go to Naboo?) to assert the validity of your accusation?" (or whatever it was Stamp said)
More importantly though, i'd like to know what Lucas was thinking of when he wrote that line. Or when he reworked the helping the damsel in distress through politics and protocol rather than blowing shit up. I mean, would ANY 11 year old kid understand the senate scene? Or would they understand just enough to get by? Assuming that they did, does that mean that the complex dialogue actually lends a weight of believability to the scene because theyre talking "like real adults and I dont really get it so it must be serious"? All I really have as 'evidence' is my 10 year old cousin, who loved TPM. It's a shame I never asked him about that senate scene, or if he knew who Palpatine was, or if he even cared.
I found this from the 'Newsround' (a kids news programme) site at the BBC.

I have no idea what Star Wars is even about! Apart from that there's a red and black guy called Darth Vader (or something). I won't be seeing the movie unless I go with someone who's really nuts on it!closing quote

Lucas is targeting this for kids because
- A. They have money, their parent's money, which they can spend whithout any thought or care.
2.The crappy plotline would go completely over their heads and would forget all about it after they see the podraces and lightsaber duels.
Lastly: They are not old enough to remember the first starwars in all it's greatness, most probly haven't seen all three movies and if they have it wasn't recently.

If thats true, then why bother with dense, complex plotting at all? Why not have 7 big set pieces like regular kids films instead of just two?

I wasn't aware Lucas used ANY set pieces, period.
(And "complex" originally meant a physical structure. Til everyone thought they sounded smart by (lazily) saying "complex" instead of "complicated," and that's how it became the history channel's favorite word.)

Jariten, I greatly admire your fortitude, but those articles were a load of crap.
Are you referring to the links I posted or what I said? I didn't mean for this to turn into another tirade against me so- what do you guys think: the prequels for kids or not? Have a click on those links I posted, kind of reminds you of when you were 10 and watching SW for the first time, right?
Despondant- If you want to get into semantics, yeah you're right. But these films are densely (and I think intelligently) plotted. I dont want to get bogged down in that fight yet. I'm saving that stuff up for my post- RotS 'lets all shit on Jariten' thread
Come on though, kids and so on. Do you know anyone under 15 who likes the new SW, like you're brother, sister, next door neighbour (etc.)?
