Yoda never was cool. He did nothing in the OT but cough and then die.

I think people loved Yoda because his name was Yoda, and he was kind of cute and wise all at once.

The best chracters in Starwars are Han Solo and Darth Vader. Everyone else is just filler.

Just in ROTJ (although, he did pass an important plot point before expiring, so I think you're being facetious).

Did you not see ESB? I think he trained someone in that one....

I think people loved Yoda because his name was Yoda, and he was kind of cute and wise all at once.

Better that than a howling, leaping, Sonic-the-Hedgehog rip-off in a pointless saber battle.

All I know is I haven't seen the real prequels yet.

AotC Yoda is easily the equal of Gollum in terms of level of realism with the CGI. Discussing actual 'acting ability' is something else. Putting aside the fact that Yoda had much less of the film to carry than Gollum did (who saved the second Rings film from totally disappointing me), Yodas 'performance' is great. Which is your choice to (obviosuly) disagree with, but to suggest that the actual CGI Yoda looks poor is a reflection of your own prequel bias and nothing else.

And 'Father of Digital Cinema' is just some title some guy thought up for this one gig Lucas is doing. But you got ahead and trounce on Lucas again for it anyway. snooze.

As someone who is losing his taste for Star Wars as whole, I'll comment.

First... CGI Yoda himself is a marvel to look at. I enjoy good CGI craftsmanship. I can't call it crappy. Although, I find his clothing extremely phoney. To my eye it just doesn't move right. Just like I don't like how the clothes hang off the Gungans in TPM or Jar Jar's cape in AOTC. There are some scenes in AOTC that are atrocious, that look and "feel" like they're straight out of a video game, and that completely and utterly disrupts my viewing and pulls me out of the film. That is counter-productive to special effects.

The scene I have in mind is Yoda exiting the troop carrier and giving orders. The background, the Clone trooper, all look so fake and video-gamish, I can not think of this as a movie. The scene later where Yoda is pondering Anakin's "turn" or he just passing gas, I don't know, that too looks video gamish and pulls me right out of the movie.

Now, to be fair. When I watch ROTJ. Yoda's "performance" is terrible. When he's hobbling across the scene in his cave, I can't help but think of Bert and Ernie; pulling me right out of the movie again. It's terrible!

I think Yoda is at his best in ESB. If it worked the first time? Why change the recipe?

Yoda's bouncing around like Sonic-the-Hedgehog was totally unnecessary. Everything you needed for that character was right there in ESB. Lucas only did a CGI Yoda because he could, not because it was for the betterment of the film or story. That, to me, is BAD filmmaking

He did it because the puppet would be unable to firstly move around realistically to the extent that was needed for his role in the prequels and secondly because the range of facial expressions a puppet can pull are really limited. Which was fine for ESB, but not enough for AotC (and RotS, im guessing). So yes, it was for the story, and yes, it was good filmaking.

YODA in ESB?

He was really annoying. He played the drunken kung fu master, only not as good.

When I was young,I bought the VHS SW trilogy, I always fast-forwarded the dagobah scene, it put me to sleep.

Ya, his role was needed, not his character.

Cool your jets, champ. You said "Lucas only did a CGI Yoda because he could, not because it was for the betterment of the film or story", and I said why thats not right. How did you go from calm to mental rage in the space of one minute (judging from your edit)?

Sorry, guys. I just snapped. I have a temper problem.

My apologies.

But... like I said, I better honor it this time. I think it's best that I don't stick around. As you can see why.

Take care. For real this time.

Jeez, what was that?

Jariten: I think there's a chicken-egg argument at play here. You're saying Lucas went with the CGI Yoda because he needed CGI for the greater range of movement screeching, flying Yoda would need, while the other guy is saying that screeching Flying Yoda was optioned because Lucas already had the CGI. I am voting in favour of the other guy on this one, since in film that is how a lot of dumb decisions get made. Some guy finds out that one of the actors can balance a pop bottle on his head, and all of a sudden it's in the scene. Soo too CGI Yoda: Lucas found out what they could do with him, and bang, he's fighting a guy noone's ever heard of before who will have no lasting importance on the series.

Yeah yeah, Geonosis, factions, weakening the Jedi, blah blah Sith, Cyborgs with lightsabers, lava. It's not storytelling; it's a load of cut scenes for video games.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

Death Stars, space wizards, teddy bears, monsters in the snow, little green muppets...

Even if we dont take Yodas duel into account, theres still so much of his contribution to AotC that simply would not work with a puppet. That is a fact. Hence the use of a CG Yoda. Watch the film, and you'll agree with me (but you wont admit it).
