I've been a member of Orkut.com for over a year now, invited by everyone's favorite temp, Chris Livingston. A year ago the site was a fresh new option to the super lame Friendster.com. It introducted a much better profile system and Communities which were a new feature.

After a year I ask myself, "Why do I never go to Orkut.com?" The answer is simple: Because it NEVER works!

Once a month I'll type in the URL and log in, waiting a minute as it slowly loads the page. After logging in every link I click gives me a 1 in 10 chance of getting the page I requested. After a minute of waiting you have a 10% chance of getting the page you requested and a 90% chance of getting a Google 502 Server Error Page. And it continues to get worse. Six months ago it was 50% usable, now it's dipped to about 10%.

If the site worked I think I would spend a lot of time there. It's a great way to fish around for interesting things, read profiles and spread Chefelf.com propoganda. The simple reason it isn't as successful as it could be is that it is bad and getting worse. Even on days when it decides to work it would take you the better part of an afternoon to navigate to a profile/community you were looking for.

So c'mon, Orkut guys. Let's get on the ball and get this thing up and running. A year of beta and you've already slipped back down to alpha. Time to put on your thinking caps, use your billion dollar Google backing and get this friggin' show on the road. You've got a lot of people out there with time to waste and you're doing us all an awful disservice with your crummy website!

Does it only have the slowdown for member's links? When I clicked on that URL you posted, it loaded up fairly fast...lol

I just thought it was strange. :S

I don't think "beta" really means anything when Google says it. Notice that they claim Google News to be in beta.

Yeah, it's only really when you load your profile and try to look at other people/communities.

ND, I agree. Google needs to take a crash course in when to admit things are ready to come out of beta. Google News has been in beta for at least three years.

This thread originally confused me since I misread the title as "Orkut: Beat My Ass!". Thought Orkut was the name of Chefelf's master or something like that. "Beta" makes much more sense.

I saw that a couple of days ago. It's TRUE. EVERYONE on Orkut is Brazillian! And everyone in Brazil is just stupidly good looking. Everyone looks like a supermodel!
