Right, I'm trying to install one of these arrogent s.o.b.s, and having battled with uploading EACH INDIVIDUAL FILE to my server, I refuse to be put off by the damned thing simply not working. So, what I assume my main problems are...

1.) Can the DSN be labelled as anything else? Because I've found nothing, nothing resembling a DSN. Is it also known as the database host?

2.) "Prefix for tables in database". I clearly need to change this to something else, any ideas?

3.) "Server port" and "database port" are one and the same, right? If not, where do I find a value for the server port?

4.) Is the "script path" where the forum is located on the domain?

I hope to Cod that's all I have to do...

Not sure what that means?

You can leave that to whatever the default is set as. If you have to name it anything you should just name it something that would be easily identifiably (i.e. phpbb_ or forums_).

Not sure I follow that one either. Perhaps they use different terminology than I'm used to.

Yes, but it's not necessarily a URL. It may be a path. Paths look different, something like: vhost/www/users/domainname.com/forums

Are you sure your server has PHP set up? If not, that would be an obvious problem.

If this is your first experience with installing something of this nature then prepare yourself for a treat. smile.gif

not too sure on any of this (Since I haven't used it...)
But on the prefix, if you have to share a database instance with other users (Which is most likly not the case) You should make the prefix identifyable, but also unique to you. like chyld_phpbb_

Well, I'm quite sure PHP is set up, as the websites now PHP as opposed to HTML and it isn't complaining. Unless I missed something?

DSN is Database Server Hostname (good abbreviating skills, PHPbb), but any further than that, I'm more lost than everyone else...

Ahhh. Well if that's the case, 99% of the time it's just 'localhost'. However, you may wish to contact your host to see if this is the case.

You'll need:

DSN (never heard it called that way before): i.e. localhost
Database name: name of database
DB user name: user for database
DB password: password for particulr DB user name

That's ususally the four things a DB/SQL thing needs you to provide.

Well, I've got all that and more, but no matter what I enter in now, all I get is this:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) in /home/www/less-is-more.co.uk/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 48

Warning: mysql_error(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /home/www/less-is-more.co.uk/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 330

Warning: mysql_errno(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /home/www/less-is-more.co.uk/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 331

If you get some money, let me know and I'll host for ya. wink.gif

As far as your problem goes, can you post the line from each file with the problem (i.e. line 48, 330 and line 331 of the PHP file). That's usually a good place to start. smile.gif

Well, there's a development. Replacing the "localhost" with a database host address has given me an error in the PHPbb colours, but this times its:

An error has occurred during installation
An error occurred trying to update the database
Table 'database name.phpbb_config' doesn't exist

Which is odd, as its supposed to automatically create the nessersary tables...

...and now there's new problems. Most of them appear to have been solved with appropriate mods, but no joy with them here.

With some of the forum features (most significantly, forum sign in and viewing last topic), it tries to download an appropriate file. No matter what browser I use, it will persist in trying to download the file. Selecting a browser doesn't solve the problem, as the download box just appears again.

And I'm trying to syndicate a section of the forum as a blog, in the same way as Chefelf uses the Office board to create material on the front of Chefelf.com. I know this requires a mod, but I've had no luck finding one that does it properly. Any advice?
