Okay, here's the problem. For some unknown reason I decided to reinstall windows a few days ago, no change to the system hardware. Previously the entire set up ran fine with the default drivers, now all of a sudden it's started pausing randomly, and slowing to a crawl (mouse pointer and all).

Since i'm on a fresh reboot (scandisked, defragged, formatted, and checked for spyware)with the same fixed bios settings, there should be no reason for this. Virtually no programs have been installed, asside from the net access. and nothing strange is in memory\running in the background. Or at least not one that I can figure out.

Any suggestions people? I'm going somewhat insane here.....

Odd. And you've made no hardware changes? I would try making sure everything is attached firmly, most importantly your RAM and PCI cards. Take them out and reinsert them, pressing down firmly on the cards.

Which version of Windows are you running?

Check if you've got fastfind running. That used to come on randomly and slow my computer to a craw, and it was hard to trace as it would turn off before I could catch it in the act(things were that slow). At a guess, when you reinstalled windows, it probably defaulted to running at certain times. Such as when I'm playing Neverwinter Nights.

Nothing quite so technical, but thanks for the advice, I've sorted it out, Chelfelf was half right, not a loose connection, but the sound card had gone slightly crazy on me (it does date back to 96, so i'll give it some credit). When in doubt, remove all the componants and replace them one by one!

Considering I didn't even touch the pc hardware I'm confused, but hey, now that it's replaced everything works fine.

Odd that a piece of hardware that has nothing to do but go 'click' would slow paintshop to a crawl.....

Glad you got it sorted out. Now it's time for a new Soundblaster. You can get them very cheap here: http://www.newegg.com
