Saw the first few episodes a couple of months ago (handy things, illegal copies), and let's put it this way. The posters saying "They're right: TV is dumbing down" were 100% accurate.

From what I've experienced overall, I try to avoid American sitcoms for the most parts these days. I may watch an odd episode of something every now and then if there's nothing else on and I'm randomly flipping channels...and I'm desperate from boredom, but for the most part, because of my basic channel selection, they may as well not exist. The only ones I'll watch are what I find on BBCA, or the ones I've heard on good authority are absolutely brilliant...which, to be completely honest, are all British.

I did really like the Drew Carey Show when I was about fifteen or sixteen, though, but I think that's just because I liked Lewis and Oswald...

My limited experience with British humor comes from Monty Python and Shaun of the Dead. And, if I may make a radical and gross generalization, it's goooood. beats the holy hell out of Raymond.

And now for something completely different. A man with his socks set on fire.

To be honest, I've never seen much Monty Python. Sure, I've seen the main three movies, but I've only seen one episode of Flying Circus, and that was when I was about 11.

For some reason I have the uncontrollable urge to demonstrate the fish slapping dance, but that would end badly for me...

Please tell me you've at least seen the Dead Parrot Sketch?

I have the audio of it, and I have seen other people perform it. To be honest, I never thought it was that great.

I do have to agree with everyone, the British not only own the title of creating some of the most intriguing who done it’s (from “Sherlock Holmes” to “Wire in the blood” the British seem to have a special ability to create gripping mysteries where the Americans failed miserably, and no, “Profiler” is no exception…) they also create the best God damn comedies around!

I mean… c’mon on! Who didn’t laugh when Mr. Faulty was goose stepping in front of German tourists, or when Monty Python was giving its dead parrot sketch (I nearly pissed myself…) and let’s not forget Ripping Yarns! Who can forget that show!

Yes, long story short: British Comedy = Great.
Other Nationalities’ Comedies = mediocre at best.

Other countries do make good comedies. The Americans have a lot of good stuff, just most of it's drowned in the waves of crap thats produced. I don't see much non-english TV, so that cuts out France, Germany, Japan etc. Australians don't make much comedy, but what we do make is usually good, just not well distributed.

One has to fear that sitcom with Jasper Carrot, that black chick, and the kid in the wheelchair. Diversity is good, but not when you forget a sitcom hinges on actually being funny...

I'm guessing I should be glad I haven't the faintest idea what the hell you're talking about.

Yes. You should.

Oh yeah, on the subject of sitcoms, Green Wing is the best sitcom around now. Sheer comedy gold.

The older British sitcoms are the best in my opinion for example: Blackadder, Red Dwarf (it started in the 80's), Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers and One Foot In the Grave and these are just a few! There is also Yes Minister, Dads Army, Porridge, Open all hours, Men Behaving Badly, The Thin Blue Line and The Brittas Empire!

However there have also been some good sitcoms of recent years such as:
Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights, Coupling, Greenwing, The Office, I'm Alan Partridge, Black Books and the neo classic Spaced.

And thats just a few of my favourite Sitcoms there are loads more I could go on forever! laugh.gif except my fingers hurt from typing now blushing.gif .
