Nickels get first redesign in 65 years
By Barbara Hagenbaugh, USA TODAY

CODE
WASHINGTON — Coin collectors, get ready for another change.
Drawing on the enormous popularity of the state quarter program, the U.S. Mint on Thursday unveiled two nickels it hopes will lure as many collectors as the 25-cent pieces.

The nickels, which mark the 200th anniversaries of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition, are the first redesign of the five-cent piece in 65 years. The two will hit cash registers in 2004 and will be followed by new nickel designs in 2005.

Why does the US always feel the need to market money as if it were a product? They did the same thing with the Sacagawea dollar. It's a dollar! You don't have to advertise it! People want money already!

You have to pay full retail for your money, nicht wahr? And if you're silly and collect things which are in abundance, rather than say all things Biafran, you're doing the creators a service by both removing from circulation, and giving them whatever they claim its value is. This is doubly grand being money, as collectors, albeit infinitesimally, slow the creep of inflation . . . or do they? Unfortunately, all those economics classes leaked out after the last serious head trauma. In any case, FDR knew, oh he knew.

Oh you think you know it all, don't you Franklin? If I want a lecture in economics from a dead man I'll invite Alexander Hamilton to post on the message board thank you very much!

P.S. How does it feel getting snubbed once again? I saw no mention of them putting your image on the new nickel. The bastards.

At least your government isn't trying to drown you all with change. We have $1 and $2 coins, and there are talks of a $5 coin! THEY JUST REDESIGNED THE $5 BILL! Sorry for yelling, but the thought of having my pants buldging with change all the time is frightening.

Yeah, I like the idea of coinage for dollars in theory but when the whole Sacagawea dollar coins were in heavy use in New York your pants would be around your ankles by the end of the day because you'd end up having sixteen dollars worth of change in your pocket.

it's even more profitable for postage stamps. the sheet of $2 ducks unlimited stamps that philatelics collect costs the same to go through the press as the sheet of 1-cent stamps the post office sells when they raise their rates.

or we just buy new stamps at market price... (every unused stamp is advance payment, like video game tokens. buy your tokens, leave the arcade: they don't care. they have your money)

and then there's the division of BPE that uses pretty packaging and charges even more! for example: a sheet of dollar bills uncut, costs significantly more than face value. and if you did trim said bills yourself to use, you might get busted for counterfeiting!
