Now, this is from my linguistics exam from this Saturday (authentic material, I just thought I'd share it with you )
Your friend borrowed from you you lecture notes and now you need them back. So you go to your friend and say "You won't been needing my lecture notes now, I'm sure". By saying this you
a) Make a direct request
make an indirect request
c) impose on your friend a face-threatening notion
d) show negative politeness

[aside]Out of curiosity MC, did you type that question word for word? It's just that for an english exam, I noticed the english was a bit clumsy. "...borrowed your lecture notes" would have been better then "borrowed from you your lecture notes". I find it quite odd, as you usually use impeccable English, and an English exam should as well. As a side note, be thankful I binned my exam question sheet after I left. That wasn't nice.[/aside]

Or retirement.
Is the purpose of wearing low-cut trousers to show off your underwear?
(about my exam question - this is how I remembered it - the awkwardness might be just me not rememering it properly, or my English declining rapidly - I am after four hours of Use of English exam and it had a bit stupefying effect on me. )
