season six was the last great season of red dwarf...
but that last episode would have been a terrible place to leave...

season 7 just had alot of things working against it...
a lack of rimmer... (without him, situations would not be adequatley affected)
sticking a girl in the mix... (boys stuck in space was funny, being stuck with the girl you alwawys pined for who wasn't interested, even though she was married to you in an alternative universe wasn't funny, it was depressing)

the X-files outlived it's welcom... it took so long to get to the bloody bottom of things that in the end i didn't give a flying farque!!!

buffy and angel... again, loved it at first... but they stretched it out...
the first thing wrong with buffy was the distribution of power...
other caracters started becoming powerfull, and that was boring... i don't know why... it just was...

MASH rocked... to hell with you all.

I'd like to revoke some of the mean things i said about MASH. I somewhat stand by my first statement, but i agree that:

a) the characters are all great. Especially after the departure of Frank Burns.
b ) The puns! My god, it seems like they never ran out!

Those are the only things i could think of to put in list form. The point is, they play it about four times a day around here and i usually watch one a day. And i enjoy it.

What about Start Trek series? But here it is, I think, not the point of series being too long, but new series being spawned. I absolutely loved TNG, but Deep Space Nine was barely watchable. And I tried to watch one episode of Voyager, and this is a complete diaster.

Also, they shoudn't have made so many feature films. The cast aged really badly, and an immortal android should not get wrinkles.

I think every show ever made probably ran too long. That's why you always hear everybody say "they early- mid years were good". You never hear "boy it really ended with a strong finish".

The Brits and Japs understand that longevity can kill a good thing. That's why they use mini series formats for TV and Comic books.

Now, Deep Space Nine has a strong following, and I genuinely think it's a good show-- better than TNG, but we don't need to get into that argument here. I personally can't stand Enterprise, but I imagine some people think it's neat for some reason.

Still, I think each Star Trek is like a different show, and if you don't like one, don't watch it, you know? They don't really relate to each other sufficiently to make it seem like one long show. So, I would argue that that's not really the same thing as running too long.

Xena Warrior Princess. Has anyone mentioned this? Hercules too. The last two or three seasons of both shows were humorless, angsty train wrecks.

Star Trek has an open script policy, one that they use an awful lot. They don't have a handful of paid writers who burn out and suck after awhile.

Voyager has moments, but got boring... +janeways a bad captain...

Deep Space Nine... is like a daytime soap opera... but when it has a good episode, it's pretty riviting... so if it's on i'll watch it... but they certainly know how to to write a boring episode from time to time...

Next Generation, i love... some slack eps in there.. but picards speaches are peaches!!!

Original... well, it could be a childhood reliving thing... but i love it to death, i don't know why. Kirk was great... between making out with every girl he met to finding an excuse to get into a fist fight in technological wonderland of phasers, lasers, and other brawl replacers...

Barend, you got a point about DSN being a daytime soap opera. I think it has something to do with stationary location.

I am not really sure about the original series. I watched a couple of episodes, and it is so passe now, the horny captain chasing everything in space in a mini-skirt...

But I love TNG. Even Majel Barret as Lwaxana Troy is watchable here, which she isn't in DSN

Babylon 5 all the way. It was planned to run five seasons, and the network forced the storyline to be wrapped up during the fourth year. When they got the renewal, it required filling the fifth season with terrible padding and pointless storylines.

They were pitiful. As soon as Xena stepped foot onto the continent of Asia it was over for me. As soon as the relationship between Gabby and Xena became serious (instead of the fun inuendo and subtle jokes that started it) it was unbareable.

It's too bad. It seemed like forever at the time but in retrospect it went downhill extremely fast. It's really only the first two seasons (I think) that were any good.

as soon as she went up against historical figures it went really bad...

i was up late once night and stumbled upon a similar show, called the adventures of robin hood or something, either way it was about robin hood...

in the episode i watched... he went up against Ghengis Kahn...

for fucks sake people... it's writing like that that gave reality TV such a strangle hold on the masses...

I will be the first to admit that Oz, the boldest and guttsiest television drama ever broadcast, did slip quite a bit in its final couple of seasons.

Perhaps HBO will be doing The Wire (the best written show on television EVER) a favor if it doesn't renew it and lets it go out at it peak.

How many seasons of Oz were there? They only started showing it here last year.
The Green Knight, SimeSublime the Puffinesque, liker of chips and hunter of gnomes.

Friends was never teh same show after the first season. It became a show that was too hip for teh room and they while they had some good episodes, alot of them were downright cringey in their awfulness.

Frasier started to weaken at the end, but they came out with a downright hilarious final season. They bought back all the witers and got back to the heart of the show. I would venture to say the final season was one of their best.

SNL has become a franchise, it will be funny some seasons, downright awful others. Even their good season, only 60% of the actual show was funny...there is always a minimum of one or two "this is the funniest thing they could come up with?" per show regardless.

Twin Peaks went on too long...should have only been a mini-series in retrospect.

Rosanne went on WAYYYY too long, anyone remember that final season? Yikes!
