I read the catcher in the rye a while ago and think it's an incredible piece of writing. Some people see Holden as a whiney and contradicting character but I find him to be very complicated and interesting, and just generally loveable. I'd also like to point out that despite what you might imagine the author of Catcher, J. D. Salinger, is actually still alive somewhere in New England.

Yes, other books you'd be amazed to know that I've read are-

Steal this book
Grapes of Wrath
Guerilla warfare
The communist manifesto
and Clifford the big red dog.

Speaking of which, Steal this Book needs a thread.

Hi guys.

I read the book a few weeks ago. A friend gave it to me, because he said I was a lot like the main charracter. I liked it a lot, even though most of the book made me quite sad.

Some of the scenes I like best is when his pal is dating his old girlfriend (been there, done that...) and that scene where he's talking to his old teacher who tells him something like: the fall you're set in to happens to men who are looking for something that their surroundings can't provide for them.

Oh, and I like his observation that the people who cry at movies etc are mostly the ones that are assholes in real life =)

Great to hear you enjoyed it, Dragonlord. I find Holden to be one of the greatest characters in all literature and definately look up to him. Oh and welcome to the boards. You know if you liked Catcher in the Rye you might like The Great Gatsby too.

I wrote my thesis on Catcher.

Dragonlord- Yeah you'd definately like Gatsby then. I enjoyed the book a lot as well but not as much as Catcher.

Jariten- That's impressive, I could write a great deal on it myself. I love the author's tone, it makes it seem more like he's talking directly to you than writing.

Jordan, you make my soul sad.

Yes, Catcher is about some wierd kid, the same way that Gatsby is about some rich guy. The same way that America is about some guy from Texas. The same way the civil war was about slavery. Blargh.

ordan, you shouldn't be really proud for not reading Catcher in the Rye. Read it, and I think you'll love it.
