I hadn't heard of it before you mentioned it. I remember a comedy which I think was called "Maid Marrion of Sherwood" or somesuch, though.

Sime, if you haven't heard of it, then you miss a lot. This is the most brillian TV series ever made. It is fairly old - 1983-1985, but in 2002 it got released on 8 DVDs. I do not know if it was shown in Australia, but it found his way to Poland in 1985-86, just when I was a brooding, neurotic teenager and ready to fall in love with the handome dark youth who played the leading role and later mourn.. but I am not going to spoil it for you.

You might be familiar with a a band called Clannad, who did the soundrack to that film, and it also remains my all-time favourite score (the girl who sings there is Enya's sister and at one point Enya sang with the band).

Really, if anyone hasn't seen it - recommend. It's brilliant. It has magic, hansome men, a lovely lady, breathtaking scenery and locations, good fights and superb acting.

Should I get a link to an ROS fan page for those who are interested?

LA, looks like we are sole fans here. I am pretty disappointed. I love the ROS and I would love to talk about it. Do you have this 8-DVD set with commentaries and “outtakes”? The outtakes are really hilarious, very funny.

I don't have the DVD set yet, but I do have the video collection and the soundtrack "Legend" by Clannad. I've heard good things about the outtakes and would love to see them.

Have you seen John Boorman's King Arthur epic "Excalibur"? It features the late Robert Addie, who played Sir Guy of Gisburne, as Mordred, King Arthur's bastard son/nephew. I am very sorry to say though that Robert Addie died last year of lung cancer aged 43. Everyone else appears to be alive except for John Abineri, who played Herne the Hunter.

In other King Arthurian connections, Ray Winstone had the misfortune to appear as Sir Bors in 2004's mishap "King Arthur".

What were your favorite episodes from the series? Of the Michael Praed episodes my absolute favorites are "Robin Hood & The Sorcerer" (the pilot), "Lord of the Trees", and "The Swords of Wayland" (which actually features an appearance by Nick Brimble, who would later play Little John in Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves") even though I also enjoy "The Witch of Elsdon", "Adam A Dale" and "7 Poor Knights From Acre" (AKA: The one with the Templers).

Of the Jason Connery eps, I think my two favorites were "Rutterkin" (the one with the pig) and "The Inheritance" (the one with King Arthur's castle).

Favorite character: probably Little John (Clive Mantle)

Favorite moments: Jason Connery brawling with a drunken Ray Winstone (Will Scarlett), Jason Connery dueling with his evil clay clone, Michael Praed's first encounter with Herne the Hunter, Michael Praed being initiated by Herne the Hunter, Gisburne getting dunked by the outlaws, Clive Mantle being outed about his relationship with Meg of Wickam, the battle against the Hounds of Lucifer, and the play put on by the outlaws in "Lord of the Trees".

Favorite Clannad music: Herne's theme (even though the show never actually played the theme all the way through, just broke it into 2 bits and played it at different times)

I've actually modeled the physical appearances of the characters from this story I'm working on called "The Castle of Gambon" on the cast of ROS, if you ever watn to hear more about that.

Any least favorite moments? I kind of disliked the way Michael Praed died; I felt like he just sort of gave up.

You know there was supposed to be a 4th season, but problems with the studio led to the cancellation before it could get underway.

I'd ask you who you think would win in a fight - Michael Praed or Jason Connery - but I'm afraid JYAMG will find it and get mad at me (he expressed great unhappiness with my "Superman VS Darth Vader" thread, among other VS threads on the Star Wars forums).

Ah, don't worry about JYAMG - he is just hot-blooded, but would not really harm you... wink.gif
I think Jason Conery would win, beacuse he was a nobleman, not just some Saxon yeoman, and got better training in swordfighting.

I can;t abide watching the episode when Robin dies or when Marion joins the convent. I pretend they don't exist... they are too sad...

And no, I haven’t seen Excalibur, although I’ve heard that the late Robert Addie starred in it. I was really sad to hear that he died, he was a lovely villain and a brilliant horseman.

If you ever have a chance to get the DVD – get it, it’s pretty expensive (like 80 pounds when ordered at Amazon), but really worth it. Theer are the outtakes, which are really hilarious, and comentary to the film made by actors, RIchard Carpenter, directors and producers. There is also ROS documnetary, featuring almost all cast and they reminisce about making the series, and stills and interview with Maire Brennan from Clannad. It is one of my greatest treasures, and I’ve been waiting for many years to get it. I got it least Christmas. It’s been really a treat to watch it all back to back and not to wait a week for the next episode.

And they mention in the comentary, too, that Prince of Thieves was a one big plagiarism. Alan Rickman who played Sheriff stole from Nick Grace. They stole the Saracen going with Robin, they even stole the scenery, that the outlaws were hiding in the trees – do you remember the scene from RH and the Sorcerer part II when the merries together with Marion hide in the trees and then they drop to the road using ropes – that was stolen, too.

What I enjoy very much about ROS are the locations – those wonderful Norman castles and leafy woods. They hunted for such locations specially, because in medieval times there were no coniferous trees in England, only leafy ones.

And the horsemanship is pretty impressive in ROS too, I actually prefer it to LOTR, where you can definitely see that actors (and especially actresses) were just using horse machines. In the commentaries, you can also hear that nowadays the actors wouldn’t be allowed to do as much stunt stuff as they were allowed back then, and it DOES look authentic.

I also love it because the girl who is portrayed there is a feisty maiden who can handle the bow and fool around with a bunch of outlawa but at the same time she is delicate, beautiful and very womanly. Mary Elizabeth Masrtantonio who played in PoT was but a poor imitation and certaily did not have Judi’s grace.

But I am really disappointed that not many people here saw this stuff...
Honestly, folks, if you read this, go and rent an episode or two, and see for yourself....

Good point, though I always favored Jason Connery sipmly because physically he was a little broader/stockier than Michael Praed, who was rather slender/lanky.

Have you ever noticed that Michael Praed looked kind of like Daniel Day-Lewis?

I've checked Amazon.com for ROS the DVD but they don't seem to have it in stock. They have a few other titles that featured some of the other actors who starred on ROS but they don't seem to have ROS itself.

You know Nasir was not originally meant to be a recurring character; I read that originally Nasir was supposed to get killed by Little John in the pilot, but the producers changed their minds half way through. It was Mark Ryan's idea for Nasir to be the quiet type.

I do not know where are you located but if you are in Europe, you can order at www.amazon.co.uk , for 81 pounds, I've just checked. And that's true, the american site for Amazon doesn't have it on stock, which is strange. It seems that t wasn't that popular over the pond, which perhaps accounts for the lack of interest from our fellow posters sad.gif

I live in Baltimore, Maryland, one of the smallest states in the [allegedly] United States of America.

My parents originally taped a bunch of ROS episodes off of MPT and later ordered official tapes from some obscure source (I know not where).

Well, it is unfortunate for you, then, because of the DVD coding zones, or whatever it is called. Europe is in zone 2, USA zone 1, so can’t really watch ROTS.
It’s a pity, because the extras are really interesting. They explained a lot about season 4th, how they had to wrap it up because of the company in the States who was financing it went bankrupt, and despite the fact that the series was hugely popular there was no-one interested in financing.

And it is interesting to hear to Michael Pread, how he decided to walk out of the series to do a play in Broadwa The Three Musketeers and it was such a massive flop, that it put him off acting and how they fired fim out ot Dynasty set (havfe you seen the episodes of Dynasty with him? He just diappeared, they never bothered to explain how come he isn’t there anymore)

It really is a shame, because he is a fine actor and very good-looking too, but his career just never took off

I know he was on "Dynasty" but I never heard that he got fired. Some people just make very dumb career moves. If Praed had made the right steps, he could have wound up playing Aragorn in the LOTR trilogy.

Any chance of getting a 2nd region DVD player anywhere?

Is Jason Connery a bad actor? I mean he's not on par with his dad, but I don't think he's terrible.
