I have heard many movie critics who hate the show and likewise hate the movie. That didn't worry me.

What worried me was critics who loved the show, and hated the movie, for whatever reasons.

I just saw it.

I love the show. I now love the movie.

Butler, Rossum, and Wilson are all great. As great as the original cast? No. Butler acts the role better and sings a bit worse, and Rossum isn't perfect as Sarah Brightman, but their overall performances are fabulous.

The music, actors, and direction generate what is perhaps the most emotion I've felt in an onscreen musical. Schumacher does a fantastic job.

If you hated the show, this doesn't make it any better.
But if you loved the show, chances are you'll be enchanted by the film as well.

I have heard very little about this movie, sadly.
The Green Knight, SimeSublime the Puffinesque, liker of chips and hunter of gnomes.

I didn't even know there was a film version out, until a friend I was visiting the other week dragged me out to see it. Not a bad film, something different compared to Hollywood's excessive volumes of tits, knives and big explosions. I'm assuming that the award for "Most Comically Ridiculous Overuse Of The Word 'Music' Sung Opratically Ever" was already given to Mr Lloyd-Webber for the stage version.

Maybe Phantom got a bad rap from critics because it was directed by Joel Schumacher, whom some people will never forgive for Batman & Robin and the whole "nipples on the bat suit" thing.

I don't even know who directs most films, so slating a film for its director to me is like declaring that a film smells of wee...

If it does smell of wee, I'd triumph it for real-time Smellovision...

Either that, or visit a nicer cinema...

Yep! That would be my demographic - although, I will give Phantom a good viewing and not base my opinions upon the director, unless he screws that one up to!

I am new here. I saw this thread and had to post. I have seen the Broadway musical and the movie and enjoyed both. The only issue I had with the film version was Gerard Butler who played the titualr role. The Phantom of the Opera, the mentor of Christine, should at least be able to carry a tune. Gerry Butler sounded like an asthmatic smoker running on a treadmill. Sure, there were some parts of some songs he did well at, but for the most part, it sounded like he was trying to pass a grapefruit through his urethra. I have heard local dinner theater singers do a better job.

Emmy Rossum turned in a spectacular performance as Christine. At the tender age of 16 (when the film was in production, she is now 18) she had such a powerful and pure voice, it sent shivers down my spine. Oh how I wish I could have sung like that when I was a young 16 year old girl. But no, I am now a damn near 30 year old man and only occassionally sing at karaoke.

In comparison of the two characters, it made no sense to have the Phantoms "student" be a much better and trained singer. I guess I just miss the haunting melodic voice of Michael Crawford.
