Microsoft Corp. announced Wednesday it is creating a $5 million reward program to help law enforcement identify and convict those who illegally release worms, viruses and other types of malicious programs on the Internet.

Microsoft said the first two rewards it will offer will be for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the spread of the MSBlast.A worm and the SoBig virus unleashed earlier this year.

The company offered $250,000 rewards for each.

Why is it that even when Microsoft does something that is technically good it still seems sleazy and self-serving?

Pssssh, this one doesn't sound sleazy at all. Though I'd have to say it's probably because they are the classic Amoral Elephant character as seen in the equally classic novel The Amoral Elephant.

If I had $50,000,000,000 to my name from selling babies for profit you'd probably see everything I did in self-defense as sleazy and self-serving too.

Seems sleazy to me. Although it's perfectly legal, they're putting their money towards catching people who harmed Microsoft, rather than looking for ways to make sure their customers don't get upset.

As I understand it, Microsoft was a fool for revealing how there was a weakness in the system and how a virus could take advantage of it.

If I had a dollar for every screaming hooker that yelled that at me.
Booze-fueled paragon of pointless cruelty and wanton sadism.

How about offering a $250,000 reward for every employee who finds a security flaw and patches it before a product ships and a $75,000 reward for every employee who can figure out how to get rid of Messenger?

As nice and progressive as said "rewarding positive action" policy would be as opposed to "punishing negative action," it just doesn't bring about that wonderful squooshy feeling you can only get when you mete out justice. Ooooh, it just makes me tingle, it does. wub.gif
