I was flipping channels one day and this special on the life and times of the cult following of slasher movies, which started around the time "Halloween" came out, followed by "Friday the 13th" and "Nightmare On Elm Street" came on. One element that seemed to keep coming up in these "horror films", or slashers as they've commonly become known as, is that they often boil down to a nubile teen, often a blonde [but not always blonde] virgin who NEVER CONTEMPLATES SEX (as opposed to the other virgin who DOES contemplate sex) fighting for her life against a deranged killer wielding a knife, [power] tool or some other blunt weapon who has killed all the other girls, some of whom may be tramps/bitches, others who might be nerds and others that are just sort of... there. In the interviews, people who were involved with making the films said that slasher films were criticized back in the day because the aforementioned finales (nubile virgin teen VS maniacal killer) placed emphasis on the idea of violence against women, sometimes overlooking the various jocks, minorities, man-nerds and the physically handicapped (Texas Chainsaw Massacre and FD13#2 both feature men in wheelchairs getting hacked up by the killer).

Does anyone here feel that slasher films in particular promote violence against women? It's possible, but just about any film, regardless of genre, could be accused of promoting violence against women. Examples -

1) Classic Star Wars Trilogy - Over the course of the trilogy Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) is shot at by the Imperial Stormtroopers at various times, presumably tortured at least once or twice, and in the final film she takes a shot right in the shoulder.

2) The Terminator - Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) is chased and shot at by the title character (Arnold Schwarzenegger). The Terminator also kills two other women (one of whom we don't see) because they had the same name and its part of the "systematic" nature of the Terminator. Sarah Connor is later stabbed/cut by the T-1000 in the sequel, T2: Judgement Day.

3) Batman - Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) is nearly sprayed with acid by the Joker (Jack Nicholson) and almost falls to her death, but is saved by Batman. Bruce Wayne's mother is brutally gunned down by a younger version of the Joker.

4) Batman Returns - Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer) is grabbed and almost roughed up by a deranged clown. Later Selina is pushed out of a window by her evil boss Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) and falls to her "death", only to be resurrected by the power of mangy alley cats. Later a woman is grabbed and almost roughed up by a thug in an alley [but she is saved by Selina in her first outting as Catwoman]. Later Catwoman mixes it up with Batman (Michael Keaton, in his 2nd and last go-round as Batman), gets whacked across the face twice, splashed with acid, thrown to the floor, head-butted, pushed into a pile of plant plots, and later she gets a helicopter umbrella wrapped around her neck by the Penguin (Danny DeVito) and is dropped through a glass green house. In the climax, she is shot up by Max Shreck, but survives just long enough to electrocute him.

5) Batman Forever - Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman) is pursued and captured by the thugs of Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones) and the Riddler (Jim Carrey) and later she is almost dropped to her death but is saved by Batman (Val Kilmer in his only go around as Batman). A nameless girl on one of the neon lit sets is attacked by a bunch of neon lit thugs, but is saved by Robin (Chris O'Donnell).

6) Spider-Man 1 & 2 - Aunt May and Mary-Jane Watson are endangered at various points by the villains; Aunt May almost gets burned alive by the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) in part 1 and later has a close encounter with Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina) in part 2. Mary-Jane gets caught in the crossfire of the Green Goblins' rampage at the fair in part 1, is also almost dropped to her death and also has a close encounter with Doc Ock.

7) Thelma & Louise - Geena Davis leads an unhappy married life and almost gets it right in the rear from a half drunken road-side bar man.

8) Romancing The Stone - Mousey romance novelist Kathleen Turner is threatened at gunpoint at least 3 times and is shot more than once.

9) X-Men 1 - Famke Janssen and Halle Berry get their leather clad asses kicked by Ray Park of Darth Maul Fame (who is later electrocuted by Halle). Mystique gets a near fatal clawing in the gut by Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) when she unsuccessfully tries to impersonate Halley. Anna Pacquin is endangered a few times, but no one cares about her.

10) Daredevil - After beating the crap out of leatherclad Ben Affleck, the ultra-vanilla Jennifer Garner gets her own leather clad ass kicked by gator-skin jacketed Colin Farrell (director Mark Steven Johnson actually acknowledged in his DVD director commentary that he ran into some problems with censors over the scene for its depiction of violence against women).

11) Troy - Rose Byrne gets roughed up by Greek thugs and, at one point, strangled by Achilles (Brad Pitt).

12) Blade Runner - Replicants Joanna Cassidy and Daryl "Splash" Hannah are gunned down by cop Deckard (Harrison Ford).

13) Ghostbusters - Sigourney Weaver is man-handled by some otherworldly powers that jump out of her chair and drag her through a doorway into another dimension.

14) Star Wars Episode 2 - Natalie Portman is almost blown up, almost bitten by CGI snakes, almost killed at various points in a CGI factory full of CGI bugs, scratched up by what looks like a giant CGI white snow-tiger, shot at by a bunch of Daffy Duck robots, and knocked out of a plane.

15) Indiana Jones trilogy - Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) is almost roughed up by Nazi thugs, chased by Nazi thugs, dropped into a snake pit, threatened with a knife, and almost blown up all in "Raiders". Singer Willie Scott (the 2nd Mrs. Spielberg) is dropped out of windows/planes/bridges and almost sacrificed in "Temple of Doom". Elsa (Alison Doody) is shot at, almost burned alive and falls to her death in "Last Crusade".

16) Back to the Future parts 1 & 2 - Lea Thompson gets roughed up by Thomas F. Wilson (Biff).

17) LORT: ROTK - Eowyn (Miranda Otto) is nearly killed fighting the Witch King.

18) The Toxic Avenger - You really need examples from this cult horror/comedy spoof?

19) Robocop trilogy - Officer Nancy Allen is hit in the face, shot up, and nearly strangled by a sadistic little brat.

20) Cinderella - Cinderella gets attacked by her evil stepsisters for wanting to the ball!

21) Any given number of James Bond films, regardless of whether the women in question are damsels in distress or ball busting kung fu models.

And the list goes on.

Actually, in several movies it seems to me like the lead female characters end up coming out on top or beating the bad guy. Take the Nightmare on Elm Street series for example, at least until the next sequel, the female protagonist always beats Freddy. There's Nancy (...sort of) in the original, Kristen in Dream Warriors, Alice in Dream Master and Dream Child (and she certainly wasn't a virgin in number five - it started off with her having sex with Dan during the opening titles and then she was pregnant for the rest of the movie!), Maggie/Katherine Krueger and Tracy in Freddy's Dead, Heather Langincamp (spelling?) in New Nightmare, and finally Lori in Freddy vs. Jason. All of them won, and that's only one set of slasher films. Yes, they get tormented for a good chunk of the movies, but in the end, there's almost a sense of empowerment because after all that, they win. I know this doesn't come close to covering all the bases or justifying much, but this is just how I see it in several cases.

Besides...sometimes you just want the bitches to die...just like any other character you don't like.

I guess I just think it's unfair for slasher films to have bear the burden of the "violence against women" criticism alone.

I wouldn't be too certain about that. Go rent some of Wes Cravens earlier films "Last House On The Left" or "The Hills Have Eyes". I would tell you why but that would ruin the movie, wouldn't it?

i've watched alot of slasher movies over the years... and i have to say, there are an abundnce of cutie/naked girls in these movies...

but if anything i think you''ll find (especially in the movies listed in the first post) that the bodycount in predominantley male.

it's always a single girl who tends to survive...
it's the poor buff surfer boyfriend who always gets the grizzliest death...

i don't think slasher films have much to answer for on that front...
For violence in general? well that's a whole other argument...

but admittedly Shawnathan brings to light some exapmles that would give the initial argument a little meat...

'The Hills have Eyes' a great moment in violent apathy on film...
rednecks vs hillbillies...
one unlikable stereo type being hunted by another...

in the end, you'll only want the dogs to survive...

but the great thing about women, is that they scream when horrified...
wearas men tend to swear... and we come up with some prestty offensive stuff...
so i guess audiences preffer screamers to cursers...

i don't know...

In a way, slasher movies do tend to perpetuate the typical, helpless female image, but come on. Westerns are considered a piece of Americana and they were far worse (damsel in distress saved by big stupid muscle-y guy with a permanent 5 o'clock shadow and no neck). As barend pointed out, it tends to be the cute, blonde female lead who winds up escaping the clutches of the crazed serial killer in almost every slasher known to man. Hell, Neve Campbell made it through THREE Scream movies nearly unscathed. The point of slashers, to my understanding, has always been nothing but violence and a bit of nudity. That would probably be why the target audience for such films consists mainly of teenaged males. However, radical feminist theory argues that the connection is made between sex and violence in those movies, as it tends to follow that two people have sex, and then they're brutally murdered. Personally, I don't see the connection, since the male half of the pair usually suffers just the same.
My opinion is that the connection between sex and violence comes more from actual pornography than a simple, harmless little horror movie.
