probably not the place for this comment either but,

Why Didn't Gandalf just have the eagles fly The Ring to Mt. Doom to begin with? blink.gif

That would have been too easy and then we wouldn't have gotten to soak up all the chaos and mayhem that went on in the process of trying to destroy the ring.

UUUgh, I really envy Supes going to that exhibition. Did they have any dresses there on exhibit? Did they allow you to make pictures? Gee, I wish I could see it.

I am slightly ashamed to admit this, but inspired by one of the fan webpages, I am knitting myself a jumper (pullover for Americans) similar to Arwen's coronation green dress. That is my amount of my geekiness about clothes.

Is it true that after publishing "The Lord of the Ring" books that Tolkien went back to "The Hobbit" and had it republished with the confrontation between Bilbo & Gollum rewritten so as to make Hobbit-Gollum more like LOTR-Gollum? I've read that rumor, but I'm not sure if it's official or not.

Did the storming of Troy in Troy remind anyone of the assaults on Helms Deep and/or Gondor in the Lord of the Ring movies?

A little bit.

BTW, I do think there's some more things to discuss in the thread. And when I have some more time, I'll get around to posting them.

Now who does that remind me of? smile.gif
You see, it all makes sense. Lucas copies Tolkien anyway right? So he makes his original movies, then makes the new ones, and goes back to the originals to fix up continuity errors created by the new ones. It's just Lucas again being influenced by Tolkien.

Going back and forth between Troy and Lord of the Rings I almost expected a crossover - Greeks soldiers invading Helms Deep & Gondor while Uruk-Hai and Orcs tried to invade the city of Troy. Images of Aragorn going one-on-one with Achilles and Hector fighting off orcs now run rampant in my over active imagination. You could put it all in a picture and call it Men Behaving Beefily.

Yes, sorry to gloat about being able to see this wonderful exhibition, but I feel I should answer your question. They certainly did have the costumes as worn by Eowyen, Arwen and Galadrielle. This included the jewelry, rings of power (Elrond's, Galadrielle's and the One Ring as commision for the movie) and weapons carried by the ladies. They also had many of the additional articles that appeared in scenes with the characters at various points in the films.

The dresses of Galadrielle and Arwen were particularly beautiful in their simplicity. Galadrielle's dress is very detailed, but it didn't strike me as overly ornate, which I very much appreciated. Arwen's dress appeared to be of natural fibres and had a homely feel about it despite also being asthetically appealing.

Supes, thanks, you weren't really gloating, just sharing with us.

And now a little entertainment to stir up the discussion.
If you were to direct and re-vamp this version, what would you change?

Here are my suggestions, just off the cuff:

- I would re-write TTT from the scratch, to get back to noble prince Faramir
- I would remove any close encounters between Eowyn and Aragorn and make her "Ice Queen" instead, and rather than bluntly having her say to Aragorn "I love you", just to suggest it, as it was int he books.
- I would remove Arwen from TTT altogether, or rather have her sent Aragorn the horse
- I would add Dunedains
- I would make the Dead more menacing, not he green sickly mist are they are portrayed
- definitely I would add Scouring of the Shire and the Saruman evil work in the shire

How about you?

I'm reminded of the stew scene from the EE of TTT, where Eowyn gives Aragorn the bad stew and we find out from that he's a Dunedain. It's neat info, but I hated the way the scene played out; I felt like Eowyn came across as a love-struck bimbo. Why couldn't some other miscellaneous Rohan person brought Aragorn the stew and Eowyn catches him as he tries to dump it out? (I assume it was cut for fear that audience knowledge of Aragorn's extended life span would take the sting out of his relationship with the immortal elf Arwen)

I pretty much agree with MC.

I would make Gimli less of an idiot. All footage of him tripping, falling down hills, falling off his horse, walking in on the Aragorn/Legolas male-bonding scene with his ill-fitting armor,"...shall I find you a box?", being carried away and the groan inducing "Toss me!" would be cut out and burned. I don't know which of the above I hated most, but "Toss me!" came pretty close; it looked like Aragorn was stalling to make Gimli say it. The only scene with Gimli that actually was funny didn't even appear in the theatrical edition but in the EE - when he's sitting on top of the dead Uruk-Hai and he tells Legolas that he won their little contest to see who could kill more monsters.

And what was up with Eowyn hugging Aragorn after the battle of Helms Deep? I know she's supposed to think he's sex on legs and all that, but how about showing her rejoice a little bit to see that her uncle (Theoden) and brother (Eomer) were still alive as opposed to some grungy ranger dude she'd only just met?

BTW, has anyone seen The Bourne Supremacy? Karl Urban, who portrayed Eomer in LOTR, had a small role in it as a Russian assassin.

Because--after asking--the eagles would carefully explain to Gandalf what he could suck on (and I promise you it wouldn't be a pipe full of Old Toby).

Besides, birds aren't reliable, unless they're trying to eat the food off your fork while you take a moment to take a breath. My parents had a bird once named Gibby who used to perch on top of his cage and watch me eat. As I'd raise my fork to my mouth, he'd swoop down, land on the utensil, and begin eating my food before I could (which was made all the worse when he proved he was a cannibal by eating chicken). In the end, I got back at Gibby, though. It's a long and very sad story. I'm still haunted by it to this day, and frequently cry myself to sleep.

ek, that's pretty plausible explanation of the conundrum, why eagles didn't take care of the ring...

And LA, thank you for shaing my view on Eowyn gratuitous scenes - stew and embracing Aragorn. I hate both of them just for the reasons you described.

I love it when we see eye-to-eye, MC.

Does anyone else think Gimli was portrayed too stupidly in TTT?
