Probably the biggest problem comes from the fact that Lucas owns the rights to the franchise. I know he started it... but with many directors out there, the studio owns the rights.
Now if this was the case with Lucas, I think 20th Century Fox would have told him to jump in a lake sometime ago.... probably around 1997.
