From 'Star Wars' to 'Simpsons,' a good year for gamers

What a year for video games -- online console gaming gained popularity, Nintendo's handheld monopoly was challenged by two new mobile products (N-Gage and Zodiac), and aggressive price drops fueled the battle for rec room dominance between the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube.

Here we look at the games themselves -- by choosing some of the best titles released in 2003.

'Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic'

Set 4,000 years before the events of Episode I, "Knights of the Old Republic" is the first role-playing game in the Star Wars universe. As the star of this sci-fi tale, you can choose your desired path -- be it a righteous or wicked one -- as you explore 10 bustling worlds alongside other traveling "party" members.

The battle system is a unique combination of turn-based and real-time fighting. Therefore, the action can be paused to assign orders, swap weapons, select Force powers and heal party members.

Because of its deep story, puzzles and strategic combat, it can take well over 50 hours to complete this gratifying adventure.

(LucasArts; for Xbox and PC; rated "T" for teen; $49.99; www.lucasarts.com)

'SSX 3'

Extreme sports fans were treated to a spectacular sequel in the "SSX" series.

In "SSX 3," virtual snowboarders are dared once again to race down a mountain and pull off crazy midair stunts. This sequel adds tricks, such as a multitiered combo system and the "Conquer the Mountain" mode that lets you take on various challenges while shredding downhill.

Slick moves and fast race times are rewarded with new gear, unlockable courses and riders, collectable trophies and extra MP3 music.

The PlayStation 2 version of the game supports head-to-head play over the Internet (network adapter and broadband connection required).

(EA Sports BIG; for PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube; rated "E" for everyone; $49.99; http://ssx.ea.com)

'SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALS'

"SOCOM II" was one of the most immersive online titles of the year.

As many as 16 players (eight per team) can test their combat skills as U.S. Navy SEALs operatives, who must work with other players to dismantle terrorist factions. This is achieved by communicating with teammates via a headset (sold separately) to coordinate attacks and choosing the right weapons or vehicles for the job.

Because of its graphic depiction of modern urban combat, "SOCOM II" is not recommended for players under age 17.

(Sony; for PlayStation 2; rated "M" for mature; $49.99; www.playstation.com)

'The Simpsons: Hit & Run'

Bart Simpson joy rides in this scene from the game.
Explore Springfield by car or on foot with this incredibly fun and silly action/adventure hybrid.

Characters from the television show give the player more than 50 tasks to complete, such as helping Chief Wiggum go undercover to bring down a notorious criminal. In another scenario, Marge is asked to race around town to destroy trucks en route to Apu's Kwik-E-Mart.

The look and feel of "The Simpsons: Hit & Run" resembles the popular "Grand Theft Auto" games because of its nonlinear mission structure and familiar control scheme, but who cares?

(Vivendi Universal Games; for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube and PC; rated "T" for teen; $49.99, (29.99 for PC; www.hitandrungame.com)
Honorable Mentions

Runners-up for best games of 2003 include: Rockstars Games' "Max Payne 2" (for PC), Nintendo's "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" (for GameCube), Activision's "Tony Hawk's Underground" (for all platforms), Sony's "Jak II" (for PlayStation 2), Ubi Soft's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" (for all platforms), Buena Vista Games' "TRON 2.0" (for PC), Electronic Arts' "Freedom Fighters" (for all platforms), Activision's "Call of Duty" (for PC) and Microsoft Game Studios' "Project Gotham Racing 2" (for Xbox).

I am not so sure I agree with this list. Putting "Simpsons Hit & Run" as one of the top games yet giving "Zelda: Windwaker" honorable mention hardly seems fair to me.

Here are my picks (in no particular order).

My Favorite Games of 2003

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (Xbox, PC)
Not only one of the best games of the year but one of the best games ever made. I'm not even a fan of RPGs and this one had me playing mornign, noon and night.

Prince of Persia (GameCube, PS2, Xbox)
An excellent adaptation of the PC classic, updated for the modern gamer yet staying true to the original.

Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker (GameCube)
While not the perfect ten game all the critics said it was I found this to be a great Zelda title. A little bit on the easy side but still fun nonetheless.

SSX3 (GameCube, PS2, Xbox)
An excellent new title in the SSX series. One of the most challenging (sometimes frustrating) games I've ever played. The sheer size of the game and the number of challenges is mind-boggling.

Please note that I have had a distinct lack of PS2 titles this year (as my PS2 was on load to a friend for about 8 months. I would expect that both Jak II and the new Ratchet and Clank game would be added to the list.

My Disappointing Games of 2003

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun (GameCube, PS2, Xbox)
While it was fun to play it simply didn't live up to the "Medal of Honor" name and was far too short.

Brute Force (Xbox)
This game promised to be "the next Halo" but instead what just kinda average. While not a horrible game by any stretch of the imagination it also just didn't come anywhere near living up to any of the hype that surrounded it.

No Final Fantasys at all in that list? No RPGs at all? No decent fighters either, eh? And the lack of any Harvest Moon... These guys are morons.. lol

Well it's a very short list. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is an RPG though.

Everyone talks a big game about Soul Calibur II. I don't see it. Maybe I'm just not a huge fan of fighting games but it seems like just about every other fighter I've ever played.

I thought Windwaker was just a re-release of Ocarina of Time.

I haven't gotten any new games in a long time. Been to busy printing Communist propaganda to play.

What the hell Warcraft III Frozen Throne was one of the best sellers! Warcraft games go gold and platinum before they even hit the stores.

Blizzard entertainment is adorn with every award PC games can get every year, and this yahoo does not even list them on the best games of 2003!!!!!!!!

The new World of Warcraft is being hailed as the greatest MMORPG ever made. It is not even ready for shipment and is already getting stellar reviews.

Frankly I m a little dissappointed that they did not get any props.

Zach, the Wind Waker came with a bonus disc for people who preordered it that included both Ocarina Of Time, and a Japanese-only re-release of Ocarina with some extra goodies lumped in (as is my understanding, anyway). Aside from that, it had nothing to do with OoT, aside from being a prequel of sorts to the entire series.

My top 5 picks for 2003 (both that I played, and that I really want to play) are:
-Evil Dead: Fistful Of Boomstick (cheap, hilarious, and addictive)
-Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (it looks a little dated, but it's still fun!)
-Star Wars: KotoR (I only got to play it for about twenty minutes, but it was still wicked cool)
-EyeToy for PS2 (perfect party game)
-War Of The Monsters (fighting with movie monsters is fun!)

Mostly PS2 titles, but that's only because all I have is a PS2. Jedi Academy, I recently realized, has a full title of "Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Jedi Academy", since it is a continuation of Jedi Outcast. Wacky. But still, it looks more like an expansion pack, and it's short, but it plays as well, if not better than Outcast did. Come to think of it, it's sort of amazing that two Star Wars titles showed up on my list, since I don't even like Star Wars anymore...

My Top 5 for 2003 (in no particular order)

Space Channel 5 (Special Edition) - (I loved this game for the DC because it is very strange, and seeing is rereleased for the PS2 made me so happy, also the fact that it comes with parts 1 and 2 ohmy.gif )

Final Fantasy Tactics - (an older game, but VERY good. I haven't been driven into an RPG storyline like this for quite some time. I thought epic stories were dead, but.... nope)

FFX - (I have to put this here. I liked it a lot. Especially to make fun of it.)

MGS2 - (Read Above Statment)

.Hack & DDR - (These were tied. I loved both of them. I can just play them until I get sore)

Ok, so maybe these weren't too bad. But If this forum existed when I had my DC, there would be some pretty bad titles.... ohmy.gif smile.gif
