Good points civillian number two. I don't really know how to retort to what you just said. Except for one thing. What do you mean by my assumption?

... Sigh.

The assumption you accused me of having made, that there are a great many "little people" out there who would have been suitable for the roles of the hobbits. I said "I'm sure there are..." making alowances for the fact that there aren't any with a significant body of film experience. I went as far as to say that they could have filled the roles just fine, without necessarily makijg the series any better than it is. You followed with "big assumption there," like it was no longer a thing you considered possible.

Your newfound skepticism has convinced me. I am now as certain as you are that there are no little people out there who could have played the Hobbits, and that, technical difficulties aside, Jackson's decision to employ digital trickery was the best decision that could have been made, to make the film possible.

Thank you for this exercise in repeating the end of a post without reading the text or the context. Please regale me now with a reply to the last word of every post I ever submit.

Poutine.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

big assumption there.

I simply feel that little people would have been better. Wether there are none or an abundance of them suited for the role... it makes little difference.

Just an opinion. smile.gif

I did not see the assumption right away, so sue me.

Maybe Fisher-Price will make a LOTR playset for their Little People toys smile.gif

I would be interested to know how *real* "little people" feel. slighted or indifferent? Tolkien wrote that hobbits were based on "them," English folks. Maybe the Brits feel slighted (or not?) I respect the thought that "midgets are actors, too" however I feel LOTR did a pretty good job as they were limited to humans, horses and CGI. I hate to see such bickering (sigh) I guess a little goes a long way.

I don't know yet. It's likely I'm going to have to miss the Boxing Day viewing as I have a post Christmas family gathering that will see the majority of the day drinking and playing cricket on a beach somewhere.

Having said that, I'll be trying to go see it before New Years. I was given La Premiere gift tickets for Fox Studios so I think I'll be redeeming them for a ROTK viewing. I went and saw the TT extended edition last Thursday La Premiere and there is something appealing about sitting back in comfort with a bottle of wine watching the final installment smile.gif

Today is my last day of work and my home PC is currently out of commission so I'm going to be a little less regular dropping in here until I get it fixed. But I must admit this forum is one of the main reasons that I will likely not procrastinate as I don't want to miss to much. There are to many cool people posting on this forum to miss it for to long biggrin.gif

Colin Ferrel 10 yrs from now would be good. PJ said during interviews that there was another actor alrweady as Aragorn, but they realized early that he was too young to pull it off. Aragorn needs some age to him, he couldn't be a guy who could pass for 28.

My 2 cents.

I tried to do an old school impression of Gagne. I thought the last line made it obvious. But since it was not, sorry, I could see you taking it the wrong way.

Ah. Well, it has been a long time since I've read or watched Fellowship of the Ring, and like I've said earlier, I haven't finished the whole trilogy. wink.gif

Are you sure about that, Despondent? That Tolkien based Hobbits on the English? I remember reading the foreword to LotR, in which Tolkien says there is no allegory of England in his books.

And another thought about Viggo: He did look pretty young, especially for someone who started acting in 1984, not as a child but as a lieutenant. I think he was the right age. He was 40 in the books, and he's almost 40 now, right? The four hobbits were supposed to be 50 years old, but I don't see anyone complaining.

According to the TT Extended edition Aragorn is 87. There is a scene with Eowyn where he tells her this. He is one of the bloodline blessed with long life. I don't recall this in the book, but it has been some time since I read it, but it doesn't seem like the sort of thing you would randomly add if it wasn't indicated in the book unsure.gif

Thats true. He is too young, I thought maybe some dirt across the face along with stubbles of hair might make him look more seasoned. But I think you are right, he is too much of a fresh faced nancy boy to take on the role.

Aragorn IS 87 yes. it's in the books. he is a numernorian which is a race that was spawned by Elros. Elrond and Elros being half-elven were alowed to choose their fate. Elrond chose to be Elven, and Elros chose a human life (like Arwen does). but a hlf-elf who chooses mortality lives for an exeptionally long time. and that is why he lives so long.

[and yes, although many generations apart, this means that Aragorn and Arwen are distant relatives :yuck: ].

I JUST saw the two towers again. Viggo is starting to grow on me, maybe I was to harsh on the guy. That near death scene brought me closer to him.

I love how the orcs have english accents. They look and sound terrific.

One new thing I've noticed is how the camera always zooms in on Legolas's face. Has anyone noticed this too? The camera zooms in on him in this dramatic way and he always belts out a funny line like " my bow is swift and steady" It sounds good in the books but when I see orlando bloom say it I can't help but laugh. It does not bug me, I think it's cute.

[The Shire] is in fact more or less a Warwickshire village of about
the period of the Diamond Jubilee ...
Letters, 230 (#178)

But, of course, if we drop the 'fiction' of long ago, 'The Shire' is
based on rural England and not any other country in the world...
[Later in the same letter he implied that the Shire was "an imag-
inary mirror" of England.]
Letters, 250 (#190)

There is no special reference to England in the 'Shire' -- except
of course that as an Englishman brought up in an 'almost rural'
village of Warwickshire on the edge of the prosperous bourgeoisie of
Birmingham (about the time of the Diamond Jubilee!) I take my models
like anyone else -- from such 'life' as I know.
Letters, 235 (#181)

I think the Balrog would have been better represented by a real Balrog, so long as they could find one of appropriate age, and who had some physical acting. Preferably clown training.

thinking back to the fellowship group photo at rivendell, a circus troupe does come to mind.
in all respect of course: "the greatest show on earth"
