To the matter at hand: i like anime. It picks me up when i'm down. When it looks good, it's gorgeous. and so on.

Some of my favorites are: Azumanga Daioh, FLCL, Ninja Scroll, Macross, Cowboy Bebop. you know, the usual suspects.
I don't have a very good knowledge of all the classic series' from the 80's like Gundam and Crest of the Stars, but someday i will!

Sound off, anime fans!!

...on a side note, does anyone here draw it?

I wish i could put this in a different forum. One where it wouldn't drown in the billions of other topics that have been thrown in the pot. Somewhere like Live Music. Just cuz. So if you like anime and want it discussed, keep this thread alive!

You know full well that I sometimes dabble in drawing anime, so I won't go into it.
My favourite anime films are Akira, Ninja Scroll, Ghost In The Shell, Macross Plus (although I don't think I've seen the fourth episode yet), Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Jin Roh, Metropolis, Vampire Hunter D, and Blood: The Last Vampire. The only TV series that I really enjoy is Love Hina, and I haven't seen more than about ten or eleven episodes of it.

How could i just ignore Hayao Miyazaki?
My favorites by him (that i've seen) are Princess Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service.

Another favorite (on the subject of Studio Ghibli) is 'Grave of the Fireflies'. Anything i say won't do it justice, so just see it already.

Ok, ok. Akira is good too. I just didn't mention it because i had seen it so many damn times.

Hmph. Well, let me start by saying I personally think Ninja Scroll and Love Hina are crap. Ninja Scroll had absolutely no plot or character to it...and that isn't cool. Love Hina is SO over comercial and vanilla. I can understand liking it if you haven't seen much anime, but almost all of their gags are stolen from other places.

Anyway, now that I've gotten your attention..My favorite series are Slayers, ranma 1/2 and Nadesico. Rurouni Kenshin is wonderful. Cowboy Bebop is wonderful. trigun is wonderful. Berserk! is pretty amazing, too. I really enjoyed Azumanga Daioh and FLCL. I think Evangelion is a bit pretentious, but it has it's good points, as well. VanDread is fun. Escaflone is interesting. I like choppy sentinces. Dragon Half is two episodes of gold. Lots of other stuff. Lots of stuff.

Love Hina is cute.

Reiner and I watched season one of Girls Bravo. It was... interesting, to say the least. Very entertaining to watch. =)

He's sent me something called Venturas Brothers or something like that, that I think we'll watch tongiht if I can find the codec to play the damn thing.

I can understand hard core anime fans not liking Ninja Scroll, mostly for the reasons Creaux stated. But it has a nostalgic place in my heart. And i like the animation style - the fight scenes are handeled quite acely, i think. And it's fucking hilarious!
I can understand hard-core anime fans not liking Love Hina, what with it being derivative and all. I like the character designs, and yes, lots of the gags are funny to me (but there are some things i cringe at).

I had a brief fanaticism in Ranma 1/2. But don't you think it goes on way too long? It ends up rehashing itself eventually. But, i still like it overall. I still sold most of the books i got.

Evangelion was pretty pretentious. At first i relished the ambiguity, but over time i realized it was just meaningless garbage. But it was still fun to see it all unfold.

Creaux, what are some of your favorite manga?

Well, I haven't readas much manga as I should, but I thought the Ghost in the Shell manga was MUCH better than the series. I also liked the Real Bout Highschool manga. The Excel Saga manga is better, as well...more focus on ACROSS...

I'll agree that Ranma went on too long, but I think the predictability of it really created a lot of humor. Two or three or four charcters would enter into a situation, I would thinkl "Shite, they're not really going ot do that, are they?", then they do it. Wonderful stuff.

Eva had a lot of cool stuff in it, it just didn't have wonderful characters, I think. It would be cliche to mention the quality of the last episodes here.

Yes, you grow to like the characters quite a bit after awhile and relish every panel/story arc they occupy.
But one day i was trying to turn my sister on to it. She liked the first volume and asked to read the next couple. She comes back to me after that and is like "Is it like that for the whole series"? I guess i should have expected that, but at the same time she hasn't gotten bored of lots of typical Hollywood fare and other monotonous entertainment, so when she said that in a displeased way i was a bit taken aback. Then it got me to thinking that there was something wrong with me for sticking to it for so long. Since then i haven't really thought about it, but upon reflection it was a very enjoyable series (up to where i read which, in relative terms, wasn't very far at all). I'd stick up for it in the end.

On the subject of EVA: EoE blew my mind. Although a lot of the symbolism and references to the old testament were poppycock, it still inspired awe. Go figure. In any case, any anime fan should see the whole series at least once.

Poll: Subbed or Dubbed or Raw?
I almost always prefer subbed... except with Ninja Scroll and Macross Plus. I'm forced to watch the Patlabor movies dubbed but i'm very used to it and really have no complaints, so i guess that can be grouped in with the exceptions.

Dubbed if its a decent made dub, subbed the rest of the time (sigh).

My taste in anime isn't the BEST, but...

I like... Love Hina, Chobits, Vampire Hunter D, Tenchi Muyo! In Love (and the other movies, Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, etc...), DevilMan, Magic Knights RayEarth, X , Iria : Zeiram The Animation (classic.) , .Hack // SIGN, Gundam Wing / SEED (quiet you), Escaflowne was alright, Rockman.EXE (or whatever the show is called. NOT the English version...)...

I think that game series Dancing Blade is amazing. It's a choose your own adventure game, but its all animated very nicely. Sure, my copy is in Japanese and an import, but...

I've been drawing anime a lot. I also got books to help me out. I only have volumes 1,3, and 4 on it, but oh well!! And also a 'Manga for Beginners' book too...

I'm done now...

I'm a little too picky about the anime I enjoy and have been out of the loop for a while, but I still watch my favorites -

1) Dominion: Tank Police [the one that got me hooked on anime]
2) New Dominion: Tank Police
3) Gunsmith Cats
4) Slayers
5) Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 and, to a lesser extent, the original BGC

I also enjoyed Record of Lodoss War (the LOTR of anime), Escaflowne and Lost Universe (even though I didn't get to see a whole lot of it). I liked "Trigun" at first but it lost me half way through.

I hear that James Cameron is doing a live action adaptation of the anime Battle Angel, using the digital cameras that were the big claim to fame for 28 Days Later.... If it pays off do you think it'll inspire a feeding frenzy of live action anime adaptations? You know how Hollywood loves a cash cow.

I just started looking round the enormous anime section of my local video shop and realized that quite a few series’ have English subtitles or dubbing. Which is good because it means that I don’t have to concentrate when I watch (no fun). Right now I’m watching the original Gundam series (great), the slightly later Gundam series (War In the Pocket, also great) and a weird thing from the 80’s called Ambassador Magma (odd).

I only ever watched some Dragonball Z cartoons and five seconds of Yigohi (I dunno the card game) and didn't like it. But you're probably going to say that I can't judge on these experiences.
