The sequels to "The Mighty Ducks" were rather superfluous (did I spell that wrong?)

I'm aware from a mass marketing standpoint, sequels to profitable movies are a Good Thing for the industry because many consumers like known quantities and alot of the work in terms of establishing storylines and lining up a cast has been done.

However, in purely artistic terms, why is any movie sequel necessary? Because its so costly to produce just one movie, its very rare that you will have a project that consists of a series of movies, planned out from the start -LOTR may be the only exception. All other movies are conceived as standalone stories. So by definition a sequel is trying to graft something onto a standalone story.

Its almost a cliche that a movie sequel will be disappointing compared to the original. And even in the case of well received sequels such as "Empire Strikes Back" and "Godfather II", the original movies work great as standalone movies and there was no need for a sequel.

A couple of others that haven't been mentioned:

Whoever greenlighted Alien3 and Resurrection deserves a special place in hell, The debate over the first 2 could rage for eternity.

Battle royale 2 : Decending into asian cinema here, The original was a cult WTF classic, and the sequel was a WhyTF mess. Maybe it all got lost in translation. Same thing seems to apply to lots of the Asian films that reach the UK (Ring, The Grudge).

Anything in the police academy series.

I want to go back to the films of the 80's, where plots were simple, and explosions happened regularly....

Alien 3 was fine, in my opinion(though they shouldn't have killed off the survivers of 2). Resurection just didn't fit, and shouldn't have been made as an Aliens movie.

I didn't particularly like Alien 3. The whole pregnant thing didn't make any sense. Plus, not many movies can compare to Aliens.

True, Aliens was indeed the best. I only watched Alien for the first time about 2 months ago, and although good for its time, was quite tame now. Aliens, though, was excellently done. Alien 3 attempted to re-create the first movie, with a single alien and no weapons. Alien Resurection tried to remake Aliens, but with unlikable characters, an annoying Ripley, and less of a storyline. It struck me more as a showy type thing, rather then atmospheric.

Can you imagine them doing a sequel to The Passion of the Christ? I can see it now - The Passion of the Christ 2 - The Revenge of Jesus.

How bad of an idea is it to make a Pirates of the Caribbean? Minor inconvenience bad or worst-idea-in-cinema-history bad?
