Just spent bloody HOURS figuring this one out, so I might as well inflict it on you lot. No posting if you know the answer.

3 people go to a hotel, and pay £30 for a room. They split the bill equally, so each pays £10. An hour later, the manager goes to their room, and says that there is a discount on that room tonight because of a faulty lightbulb (Or window. Whatever). They only have to pay £25. Each of the customers take £1 back, and they let the manager keep the other £2.

Now, they paid £9 each, and 9x3=27. The manager got £2, so that makes £29. Where's the other pound gone? Eh?

I spent hours working this out when I heard it, but I found an answer. Which I've forgotten.

substitute the word 'dollar' for 'pound' as needed, for the desired effect of 'EH?! How the HELL does that work?!'

took me twenty minutes, but i've done it before. confusing as hell.

My dad told me that problem once; it took me a long time to figure out. A fun trick is to add lots and lots of unnecessary details (where they are, why they're there, the state of the room, etc.) which confuses the victim even further. His started something like "Three brothers are going to Debuque..."

Hmm...Those types of problems are always good...but...knowing the secret sort of makes them easy.

(*slaps forehead*)

I blame temporary retardation...I was thinking of something entirely different.

Stupid! Stupid!

To be honest, I hate this question. It saddens me to admit that I've never got it.

Wow, you sure are optimistic. Unfortunately, I was tormented only for a couple of minutes by your question. Sorry to bring down your hopes...

You should make the question longer, and instead of saying $25 and $20, write twenty five, and thirty, except at the very end. If it hadn't been for that blatend $25 all by its lonesome i never woulda got it. Still nice riddlethingy.

arkDay ightKnay, erethay isay onay issingmay ollarday.

The first clue is of course that you can experiment with real dollars and no money disapears.

This is a pretty old riddle, but a really effective one. By now I'm sure you've been flooded with emails, so I won't send you one myself. PM me if noone sends you an answer.

Speaking of emails, I got one out of the blue from a total stranger doing a "survey" about attitudes toward STAR WARS, and what I think makes fanboys tick, form like an insider point of view.

Apparently he spammed the chefelf forums. I guess he hadn't bothered to read the posts there. Not a lot of fanboys, more a discontented and bitter rabble.
