QUOTE (civilian_number_two @ Oct 17 2004, 10:34 AM)
Speaking of emails, I got one out of the blue from a total stranger doing a "survey" about attitudes toward STAR WARS, and what I think makes fanboys tick, form like an insider point of view.

I got this too, and I'm not that fond of those films. *shrugs*

Curious... that's the first time I've heard that riddle. Its a corker though.

I thought the puzzle was harder on last week's SURVIVOR. That took me a minute or two to put my head around.

Silly me.

Highlight below to find the answer if you must... but be ashamed as you do so.

Originally they had paid £30 for a bill of £30. Now they've paid £27 for a bill of £25, so the manager pocketed the remaining £2. The remaining £3 (not £1, as the £2 should be subtracted from their payment not added) is shared between the customers as they've taken £1 refund each.

So original situation:
HOTEL: £30

New situation:
HOTEL: £25
Manager: £2
Customers: £3

So their payment of £27 includes the manager's slice, and there's £3 "missing" in their wallets.

Strangely, I had worked it out, then dismissed it for some reason. I rather liked the riddle "Think of words which end in ‘-GRY.’ Angry and hungry are two of them. There are but three words in the english language… what is the third word? The word is something that one uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is."

I've seen that one before, but for some reason failed to solve it. Now it seems obvious... is it: language?

I know that one. How do you do that white on white thing?

Oh wait, Chris already did it. Yeah, that's the one. It doesn't really make any sense the way it's presented, but I won't say why, in case anyone is trying to figure it out.

Chris had it right, and I did notice the problem, but it was too late to edit, and retyping it would have made it to easy. Plus, its not a huge problem, so I figured it was ok to leave.

Well, I think you presented it the way it usually appears inprint. The problem is, it's really a joke that only works orally. That way you can suggest that there implied punctuations that your audience must have missed, etc.

Anyway, it's a silly riddle.

How to hide text:

Set the color of the text to "#f0f0ff" if it's going to be one of the darker-background posts, or "#f8f8ff" if the lighter background. To see how to do colors, try selecting a block of text and selecting a colour from the dropdown box of colours. Then just change "blue" or whatever to one of the above WITHOUT quotes.
