I noticed this on the (wireless) campus of my old school, and I notice it here in my house, where we have wireless...Why does the signal stregnth vary, even when your comp is a desktop that's not going anywhere and it is 4 AM and not much else is going on in the house? Quite vexing, it is, having to keep shutting down and restarting my connection in order to continue an IM conversation.

Personally, I'd reccommend using a wired connection. Less security issues.
To specifically deal with your situation, however, I'd say it's just something going on with your router's configuration. Try contacting the router manufacturer (be it D-Link, Linksys, or what have you) and see if there's anything they can offer. I stick to wired connections, so I'm not too familiar with problems like this.

Only reason we're using wireless is we don't want to drill too many holes in our house, as it's quite old, and we're trying to get "historical buildingness" established for it.

I am not a fan of wireless, myself.

Just gotta live with it.

Thanks for the help, though.

I use linksys. My only options where I live are 20k or less dial up connection, or the networked satellite that my dad set up. It can be raining in like, Boston, and my satellite signal here will be fucked up. dry.gif But it's fantastic when it actually does work. I usually end up bouncing between the satellite and dial up, depending on signal strength.

It's a linksys system run onto a DSL line. I'd understand if some vaguery of this 'ole house caused it, but the same happened all across the campus of Seton Hall.

It's annoying, but two easy fixes are buy a signal booster high gain antenna (grrrrrmoremoney, lessfood) or move my computer into an awkward position nearer to the broadcaster.

I guess I'm mostly just curious.

You should never have to shut down and restart a connection. You really didn't answer my questions but if you do I could help.

Well, right now I'm in the midst of yet another wonderful computer problem...My PC at home is interesting. Right now, Trillian, my messenger program, is working AOK, but neither browser (Internet Explorer nor Mozilla Firefox) are working. I've tried to repair connection, but it says it is unable to reset my IP address. Noone else in my house is having a similar problem. I'll look up model number and such when I get a chance.
